“I wasn’t hired by the Nigerian government” – Stephen Davis Allegedly States

Stephen-Davies-600x335

Over the past couple of days, Australian hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis, has been embroiled in quite a bit of controversy over his allegations about Boko Haram’s source of funding.

Davis has repeatedly stated that he was in Nigeria for four months, acting as a Boko Haram hostage negotiator to help free the Chibok girls. It was during the said negotiations that he claimed to have discovered that the terrorist group was being funded by prominent Nigerian politicians including,  Ali Modu Sheriff.  He also alleged that funds were being transferred via CBN.

The federal government via a statement last week, denied hiring Davis as a Boko Haram hostage negotiator.

And now, Vanguard has published an interview that Soni Daniel allegedly had with Davis.

Read excerpts:

On whether he was hired by the Nigerian government

I was not engaged by the Federal Government of Nigeria, any state government or any other party. I went to Nigeria in late April in an effort to facilitate a handover of the Chibok captives after discussing such a possibility with former commanders of JAS (Jama’atu Ahlul Sunnah Lih Da’awa wal Jihad otherwise known as JAS) and others close to Boko Haram.

On why he thinks Nigerian politicians are sponsoring Boko Haram

The political sponsors of Boko Haram seem to think that they can use Boko Haram to terrorise Nigeria to demonstrate that the current government cannot ensure the security of Nigerian citizens both Muslim and Christian. Therein the sponsors assume they can undermine any efforts of the current government to be re-elected in 2015. Herein lies the flaw for the conflict and instability currently being fanned suits the aims of Al Qa’eda and the architects of terrorism. Should the sponsors of Boko Haram win government in 2015, they will likely find that they cannot turn Boko Haram off or that Boko Haram will demand control of at least Borno State in return for reducing their attacks. Borno State may be just the beginning of an expanding caliphate.

Ebola: British Researchers Partnering with Dangote to Release Vaccine by December

33 H7N9 Bird Flu Cases Confirmed In China

There appears to be a ray of hope in the fight against Ebola.

Dr. Mike Turner, a British scientist researching Ebola, told Punch that thanks to a partnership between the non-governmental organisation he works with, and Dangote Foundation, an Ebola vaccine could be available as early as December this year.

Turner is Head of Infection at the Wellcome Trust, an NGO in the UK that facilitates medical research.

Speaking on the partnership, he said:

“We are delighted that the Dangote Foundation is joining the Wellcome Trust and others in the international consortium of funders to develop a multi-pronged approach to combating Ebola.

This is a fast-moving scene at present and it is not yet clear precisely which partners will fund which components of the work that we hope will lead to new diagnostics, drugs and vaccines.

What is more important is that the partners are all not just talking about the problems, but actually trying to make things happen and the future inevitable epidemics. If things go well, we hope to know whether this candidate vaccine is safe, with some prospect of protecting people by Christmas.”

In addition to the Dangote Foundation, the Wellcome Trust is also partnering with the National Institutes of Health and GlaxoSmithKline in the United States, as well as other organisations.

According to reports, the vaccine will soon be tested in Oxford, England as well as Gambia and Mali.

A company called Okairos is said to have originally developed the vaccine, but development was taken over by GlaxoSmithKline last year.

The Reason I Fought With Bishop Oyedepo - Pastor Tunde Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly in an  interview speaks on the  reason he fought with Bishop Oyedepo,  his experience as a running mate to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari at the 2011 general elections amongst other issues.

[caption id="attachment_748" align="aligncenter" width="250"]Pastor Tunde Bakare Pastor Tunde Bakare[/caption]

In this interview with Adeola Balogun, Nonye Ben-Nwankwo, Pastor Tunde Bakare opens up

On his take on anointing oil

People like to create their own Tunde Bakare. I love God, I love people, I love the godly and the ungodly and I try within my God-given ability to teach the truth. The reason I fought with my friend, Bishop David Oyedepo, and tore his book, I remember when we resolved this problem in London, we came out of a plane, he took me aside and said he was angry with me because I tore his book. I said I didn’t tear your book, I tore my book.

That is fine, you wrote it, I bought it, so it was my book I tore. I saw errors in that book because he said the anointing oil is not a symbol of the Holy Spirit that it is the life of God in a bottle. How can you write that and I would let it pass.

No! If the anointing oil is the Holy Spirit, then Jesus is a lamb walking on four legs. These are metaphors and when you have the real, you leave the shadow. Besides it is for the sick in the New Testament. So, you can anoint the entire church if they are sick and I would wonder how a sick church can bring healing to a dying world.

On his participation at the national conference

Number one, I didn’t select myself; I didn’t force myself on the government. I represented the South-West geo-political zone. When the elders met, they put my name down. I pleaded with them that I would not even have the time. But they insisted that they wanted me there and you don’t reject your elders if they feel you have something to contribute or they consider that you are relevant.

Two, while I was still battling with who will represent me at the conference, the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, also put forward my name. At that point I decided to give it a chance. But I gave a condition and that condition was that I would not take a penny from the conference; I would not be given any allowance and I wrote a letter to that effect and they replied me. I did this so that if anything went wrong, I would retain my freedom to express myself freely. That does not mean others who took the allowance are bad people. No! We see things from different perspectives. Staying in Abuja is very expensive. I won’t tell you how much I spent but I travelled on each occasion with my research team and about three to four staff and we stayed in a suite which is quite expensive.

On if he has joined politics again

I have never joined politics. I am a nation builder, I am not a politician. I sleep well, I wake up well. I have no ambition; there is no desire to be anything in politics. All I want to see is a nation that works. If you ask me today if I am seeking any elective office, my answer will be no. I was asked to be a running mate to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, I was not looking forward to it at all. But if I am beckoned upon to do something, I will pray about it and if I see that it does not negate what I stand for and believe in, why not? The truth is that if good people don’t participate in politics, then we will continue to endure the rule of idiots.

On if asked God and was told to go ahead  to be Buhari’s running mate

Several times Paul would say in the Bible that “this is I speaking but not the spirit of God even though I have the spirit of God in me.” With every sense of modesty, a man like me would not jump without looking. If you don’t look and you leap, you can leap into disaster that would backfire on you and everything you stand for in the society. When my book is out, it would be clear to all the process it took for me to be a running mate.

I sat in my house, leading a group called Arrow Heads which is already public knowledge after Mallam Nasir El-Rufai wrote about it in his book, ‘Accidental Public Servant.’ We gathered a group of Nigerians we felt could make a change in our clime. People like Oby Ezekwesili, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Donald Duke, Nasir El-Rufai, Nuhu Ribadu, Fola Adeola, Jimi Lawal, Yinka Odumakin, Jimi Agbaje, Wale Osun and a few others.

We said to ourselves that we should form the Arrow Heads to produce a change. And when I was given the privilege of being the chairperson of that group, I told them I would only accept on two conditions. Number one, that I would not join any political party and number two, I would not seek any elective office so that if there is a dispute, I can effectively resolve it. Those around me know that I have no desire for a political office but those who don’t know me think I am an opportunist.

Gen. Buhari called me on January 15 of that year and said, that he had done his own little prayers and he wanted to ask me to be his running mate. I told him I couldn’t because I lead a group and I had given them my word and that my word is my bond. I also told him that I had no desire for a political office; all I wanted to see was a change and be among those who work behind the scene. So, Gen. Buhari asked me to pray about it that he would get back to me. Within six or seven hours, he called back and I told him that I had not consulted my people. The first person I called among others was my wife and daughter and then spoke to Pastor Adeboye twice on it.

Speaking further, Pastor Tunde Bakare said

You see people don’t know things that happen behind the scene. I spoke to him twice and he said look, don’t be afraid, step in there, whether you win or lose, God is taking you somewhere. I didn’t jump because of that. I spoke to my mother and she said she had a dream about it six months before; I still didn’t jump. I thought it would be unfair not to tell Bola Tinubu because I had been brokering some things between the then Action Congress and the Congress for Progressive Change before the AC became ACN. So, I called Tinubu in the presence of Jimi Agbaje and Yinka Odumakin. I said to him that Gen. Buhari had called to offer this, give me a Christian from your group so that I can present to him. I invited the former governor of Ekiti State, Niyi Adebayo to my house and told him that he would be a better person to handle this. Both of us were in the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos at the same time. So, I looked for every way not to take Buhari’s offer and I didn’t fill the form. I took my team and went to the General and asked him why he wanted me to be his running mate. He said three things, “your passion for Nigeria. You have been a Muslim before, you are a Christian now. You have lived in the North, you were born in the South, you understand the geography and I think you can be a positive influence to pull the nation together. Number two, your integrity, number three, supposing I die in office like Yar’Adua, I want someone who would not sell out, who would still continue my vision for this country.” Still, I didn’t fill the form.

I went to El-Rufai’s house, we sat down there and he encouraged me to take it and I said I was not taking it. I told him I needed to clear a particular thing in my heart. Everyone who had been assistant to Gen. Buhari died before him. Tunde Idiagbon is gone, Okadigbo is gone, Ume-Ezeoke is gone, why do I want to go and put my head in a death sentence. I need to know what is responsible for that, so I can’t just jump, I will need to pray through. I told Gen. Buhari the same thing I am saying now.

The day before the final submission of names, former President Olusegun Obasanjo told El-Rufai that he was ready to support Buhari if he could drop me and replace me with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as his running mate. El-Rufai ran to me, that this was what Obasanjo said. The three of us were in the same hotel but in different suites. We went straight to Gen. Buhari and I said to him that breakthrough had come. I told him I had not filled the form and that there were five reasons why he must take Okonjo-Iweala. Number one, she is Delta-Igbo, you would have solved the problem of South-East/South-South. Number two, she’s a woman, you have settled the gender issue. Number three, Christian, balanced ticket. Number four, a former minister of finance and former minister of external affairs, experience which I don’t have. Number five, World Bank top executive, international exposure. Even though I have travelled round the world, I have not worked in any organisation, she is a better candidate. This is the form, I have not filled it. General Buhari looked at me and said did Obasanjo speak to you and I said no that he spoke to El-Rufai and I believe him. And he asked El-Rufai to repeat everything Obasanjo said to him and he did. He said to El-Rufai that well, you have worked with him and I have worked with him too, he would have something up his sleeves which we don’t know. Buhari turned to me and said, Pastor Bakare, I have waited long enough and today is the last day, if you are not going to fill the form, give it to me, I will look for someone until we can get a person like you. At that point, I became overwhelmed and I signed the form and El-Rufai seconded. That was the process; it was not an overnight thing.

On if he has any regrets accepting that offer

Not at all. If I have the chance, I will do it again. Buhari is an incorruptible leader. He is a man whose word is his bond. He is a reliable person and he loves this country. I don’t flatter people and you know I fought almost all military impostors in this country; there was a time I couldn’t stand any of them. But getting close to him, I realised he loves Christians as much as he loves Muslims.

For those who said why Buhari? I remember Adunni Abimbola Adelakun, she wrote why can’t Bakare run as President? Why do you have to be a running mate? I just laughed when I read that. Don’t forget that Joseph served Pharaoh, Daniel served Nebuchadnezzar, and we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, so you can maintain contact without contamination. Anything that would contribute to the wellbeing of the people of this country, as much as God gives me the grace, I would do it.

On if President Jonathan was still on a mission to ruin Nigeria as quoted in 2012

You do not separate a statement and body of facts that led to that statement. President Jonathan himself is a victim of circumstances. Who groomed him for what he is doing? I think he has had to learn on the job. Whether he is learning fast or is taking his time, is for others to comment. I marched on the streets of Abuja, Lagos, led Save Nigeria Group in different campaigns for him to become Acting President and he subsequently became the President of Nigeria.

He is alive, if I have taken a dime from him for anything, he can say. Not that they would not want to be a blessing to me but I don’t take. My hands have provided enough for me. I am contented. I have had the privilege of sitting with the President this year about five times and it is always about how to move the nation forward. I remember when the President wanted to see me; I called Gen. Buhari immediately to inform him about the invitation because I don’t double-deal. I am a loyal person and I made the President know that I informed Gen. Buhari before coming for that particular meeting. The things he said to me are not for now; they would come out at the appropriate time.

I think Jonathan is honestly doing his best but history would judge whether his best is good enough. The Nigerian issue is complex. It requires a level of capability and dynamism and that is not common among the current politicians.

On if Nigerian Churches being a Theatre applies to him

It doesn’t.  I said the difference between the cinema and the church in Nigeria is that for the cinema you pay a gate fee before you enter but in the church, they let you come in before they take from you. When the youth pastor was ministering today, I said wow, if I am out of here today, these people can continue.

It would be recalled Pastor Tunde had stated his stand on the use of Anointing oil saying:
“I am not against Anointing Oil. The thing is, it’s a Jewish Culture. They rub it on their bodies as protection against insects like your mosquito repellents. It was used extensively in the old testament for anointing …It is the power of God that heals, not the Oil”.

Pastor Bakare is a former Vice Presidential candidate under the Congress for Progressive Change and Convener of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG).

My Wife Slept With Our Neighbour - Man Tells Court

The 35-year-old marriage of Israel Sanusi and his wife, Airat, has been dissolved by an Igando Customary Court on the grounds of infidelity.

The Court President, R.I. Adeyeri said he was left with no choice than to dissolve the marriage seeing that the couple can no longer live together as husband and wife.

Mr. Sanusi, 75, had dragged his 51-year-old wife to court for allegedly sleeping with his neighbour.

According to the plaintiff: “I caught my wife red-handed inside our bedroom making love with one of our neighbours and I immediately reported her to her father who advised me to ignore her and marry another wife.“

Whenever I try to make love to her, she would beat me or use a sharp object to attack me.“She also used a broken bottle to stab me on such occasions.“It was frequent fights over sex in our former house that forced the landlord to give us a quit notice,” he told the court.

Airat, however, defended her action saying the man who her husband claimed to have slept with her was invited by her to repair “something” in her room.

Adeyeri, the court president said: “All efforts to reconcile the couple had proved futile as the petitioner insisted on divorce.“The court has no choice than to dissolve the union despite the fact that the wife still claims she love her husband.“

Both parties are no longer husband and wife, they are free to go their separate ways.”

Adultery Scandal Rocks Methodist Church

download (3)Controversy has trailed the reinstatement of one Methodist Church priests, Rev Abayomi Okesanya who was sent on suspension for alleged adultery as church members at the Ereko circuit, Diocese of Lagos, Methodist Church of Nigeria are protesting his return.

Aggrieved members of the church located at No 18 Ereko Street, Idumota, Lagos have vowed to resist the return of the priest.

According to The Sun, the Priest’s wife, Yemisi Okesanya accused him of impregnating another woman.

Meanwhile some members of the congregation, who spoke with Saturday Sun, claimed that they were shocked by his sudden return despite the fact he is living with another woman apart from his legally married wife.

Determined to draw the attention of the church to what they described as an attempt by some leaders of the church to disregard biblical and age-long doctrine, members of the church told Saturday Sun that the cause of the problem can be traced to the couple’s childless state.

According to a woman leader in the church: “He has been married for years and unfortunately, no child came out of it. Unknown to his wife, Rev Okesanya, with the aid of his family, made another arrangement and kept a mistress aside who started breeding kids for him. When the wife finally realised what had happened, it caused much crisis at home and eventually her exit in 2008.

This very man had two kids abroad before he got married. Assuming it was a child that is his problem, he already had two. You can imagine what ordinary members of the church who do not have kids will do if they find themselves in a childless situation. Most of us still believe in Methodist church, but if this is allowed to continue, they will lose so many members and I will be one of them.”

A priest in the church told Saturday Sun that the main issue is that the church should not allow a man who is living with another woman while his wife is still alive, to mount the pulpit. “It is wrong and bad for the image of the church. A lot of Christians live by what they see or observe. You cannot tell people to go home and resolve their problems. They will surely make reference to this case. I do not know why he was allowed to return to the church as a priest. It is wrong and totally against the church doctrine. If he had repented, it is a different thing all together”, he stated.

Another priest in the church, Deacon Bode collaborating the claims of the others said. “I am not judging him but the Bible says we should repent from our wicked way and stay away from such act. There is no need to talk about investigation because the message is clear. He is living with an illegitimate wife who had given birth to four kids for him. Why should they allow him to mount the pulpit again? No one will talk about it if he was just a member of the church. I guess there are so many men into this these days but they do not ridicule the word of God by throwing it at the face of the church. What I fail to understand is why the presbyter could be shielding him.”

A member of the church however, pleaded that members of the church should mind their business and allow God to be the judge in this case. “It is true that he is separated from his wife and is living with another woman. I do not attend church because of any man or woman but am guided by my conscience and what the Bible says.”

Meanwhile when Saturday Sun contacted Rev Okesanya on phone, he described it as mere rumour and should not be taken seriously.

However, Rev.Okesanya’s estranged wife had a different response saying: “I am a Christian and I have decided to forgive him and move on with my life. The truth is that if I decide to take it personal and habour hate against him, I will also live a depressed life.”

“The past prelate called me when the matter came up. The archbishop also called and was investigating the matter. They have been investigating the matter but God knows that I have forgiven him and even if he decides to repent, I am not willing to give it another try. I was also told that he is threatening to apply for divorce. If he does that, I will be very free at last. All I have to tell people, especially women, is that they should investigate properly before they jump into any marriage even if it is a pastor. Be wise, I have learnt my lessons”, Mrs Okesanya stated.

The new prelate, Dr Samuel Emeka Kanu Uche , commenting on the issue said that the church got complaints from members of the church and has ordered a thorough investigation.

The prelate, who spoke through the Secretary of Conference, Rt Rev Raphael Opoko, said he does not tolerate indiscipline in the church. “Methodist church abhors, condemns and rejects any act of adultery or polygamy in the church. It is against our doctrines and we will not allow such to thrive in the church of God.”

Rev Opoko said: “The current leadership did not receive official complaint on this matter but because of the sensitivity of the matter, the church during its recent conference, raised the matter and ordered that there should be a thorough investigation. It is a sensitive case and the committee had been given till November to submit its report. If found to be true, Rev Okesanya will be made to face the disciplinary committee. The church would not want any matter that will discourage its members from living a life worthy to make heaven.”

“There was no written report from anywhere. It was just a rumour and verbal accusation by members of the church. Until the committee comes back with its report, Rev Okesanya remains absolved of all allegations. Nobody has any right to suspend a priest based on a verbal allegation.”

Nigeria vs Congo: Shock For Players And Fans

M1XhXLy2jaNJC2ypVnkMlYUtNigeria’s Super Eagles had their first qualifying match in Group A on their way to Morocco for AFCON 2015 on September 6, 2014, Saturday.

It all started well, especially after an early goal by Afe Ambrose, about 13 minutes after the start. But then it was a shock for the defending African champions and their fans. Three conceded goals in a row put the team 1-3 behind. The search for two late equalizers was only 50% successful.

The Super Eagles lost their first game in Calabar, 2-3. Before today, their worst performance at this stadium was a 1-1 draw vs Kenya last year.

Looks like the rift between the NFF and Coach Stephen Keshi was one of the factors which affected the overall performance. The next qualifying game takes place in South Africa, on September 10, 2014, Wednesday.

Learn the crucial moments of the match below:

90`+6 Nigeria’s non-stop attacks were neutralised. Full time. What a sensation in Calabar.

‘Make Abducted Girls Sacrificial Lambs’ - Chibok Chairman

[caption id="attachment_729" align="aligncenter" width="475"]Chibok women storm Abuja Chibok women storm Abuja[/caption]

Its been over 130 days since the over 200 Chibok school girls were kidnapped by the dreaded Boko Haram sect on April 14 in Borno, the traumatized parents have called on the Federal Government to go to Sambisa forest and bring back the corpse of their children dead or alive.

Speaking on behalf of the parents, the chairman of Chibok Local government, Tsambido Hosea, in an interview with Premium Times on Friday, August 29 during a protest to mark the 130th day in Abuja said the parents have not been able to move on with their lives since the abduction of the girls.

He said the parents have given up hope and are seeking a logical end to their trauma either by burial or reunion.

Chibok Chairman, Tsambido Hosea said: “The parents say they don’t care about their life but let them go in. If they can take care of this Boko Haram, so that they will not spread to other places. So that they cannot continue with their menace.

“Let the girls be sacrificial lambs. That’s what they told me yesterday.

“I phoned them, that I know that I am going to face some interviews today. What is your opinion? So this their opinion.

“Actually, if the federal government has that capacity, let them go into the Sambisa. If there are some that God said will be rescued, it can be rescued by the force.

“And if some has gone, its okay, than all this troubles, than all this trauma the parents are going through now.

“They cannot do anything. But had it been they buried them, they would have forged ahead with their lives.

“They are saying let the government go into the forest. Even the corpse, let them bring the corpse of the children so that they will bury them properly.

“What they are saying is that these girls in the bush, it is better for the government, to go in with the force, with the army might to bring them even the corpse for them, so that they can bury them properly.”

“If the Federal government has that capacity, let them go into the Sambisa. If there are some that God said would be rescued, they can be rescued by the force and if some have gone, it’s better (to know) than this entire trauma the parents are going through,” he said.

Ebola: FIFA Threatens To Disqualify Super Eagles

[gallery ids="724"]

FIFA threatens to disqualify the Nigerian Super Eagles if any of the players wears unacceptable gear in the first leg qualifier of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Before even starting the fight for the championship in the upcoming tournament, the Eagles’ are already cautioned against being disqualified in the today’s match Nigeria-Congo, Nigerian Tribune reports.

Ahead of the match to be held September 6 in Calabar English Premiership sides, Chelsea and Manchester City, provided both Mikel and Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast) with special kits expected to protect them from the virus during AFCON qualifiers.

However the international football body reportedly warned both Nigeria and Ivorian federations they should comply with the dressing code of the tournament as they wrote:

“FIFA only permits players to wear a cap that covers their head to the hairline, but does not extend below the ears to cover the neck. We don’t condone an infringement of the Laws of the Game. The match commissioner and match referee for the Afcon qualifiers will apply correctly the Laws of the game.”

It would be recalled that days ago the team’s John Mikel Obi arrived at the training camp in hand gloves and made jokes about Ebola virus currently ravaging West Africa. He told the Eagles’ head coach Stepeh Keshi

“Coach I have up to four hand gloves and if you don’t mind, I can hand one pair to you.”

As for the upcoming game, it has been recently made known that the victorious Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama will miss the first AFCON game for personal reasons, however no further details were provided on the issue.

Despite this hardship, CSKA Moscow Striker Ahmed Musa expressed his confidence in the Super Eagles’ victory this Saturday saying:

“We already know ourselves and we know that we will win on Saturday.”
