Mum drowned toddler son before jumping with older child to their deaths

A suicidal 24 year old mum drowned her 2-year-old son in their family home before going to a rock in Dartmoor and plunging 100ft to her death - with her five year old son on her back. Read the full story from the Mirror below...

Katherine Hooper and five-year-old son Joshua Patterson were killed when they fell between 80-100 feet from Lowman Tor at Haytor Rock on Dartmoor last July.

When police later went to her family home in Paignton, Devon, they discovered her youngest son Sam dead in a double bed.

An inquest at Torquay, Devon, heard that a suicide note was found by police hidden within a book on a shelf at her home. It was not dated but detectives believe it was written a couple of weeks before the tragic triple deaths.

A coroner has ruled that Kat, as she was known, killed herself but unlawfully killed Joshua. He returned an open verdict on toddler Sam.

The hearing was told after a Dutch holidaymaker sent police a photo which showed Kat and Joshua on the rock in the moments before they fell to their deaths.

And other foreign and local people saw the death fall and had witnessed Kat moving closer to the edge of the drop from the granite rock with Joshua having a ‘piggy back’ ride on his 24 year old mum’s back.

Kat and Joshua both died from multiple injuries, suffering head and neck wounds which rendered them unconscious before they died.

But a pathologist was unable to ascertain what killed Sam.

The South Devon coroner Ian Arrow said: "I am not certain that I can record drowning as his medical cause of death.”
Mr Arrow said Sam ‘probably died well before’ the day his mum and older brother fell to their deaths and he said Kat and Joshua had left their home ‘in a hurry’ after he died.

A Home Office forensic pathologist Dr Russell Delaney said Sam’s death was ‘suggestive of drowning but not diagnostic’.

He said there was no evidence that Sam had been smothered but a bath half full of water was found by police.



Detective Sergeant Andy James, from the Major Crime Investigation Team, said on Friday, July 12th, police received reports from members of the public of two lifeless bodies being found at the bottom of Lowman Tor near Bovey Tracey, Devon.

He said people climbing on the famous Haytor Rock saw a woman with a young child which was not that unusual.

But he told the inquest: ”They seemed to be precariously close to the edge of the rock.”
He said one witness looked at them but felt they were intruding and although unnerved by the situation they ‘let them be’.

A German holidaymaker said Joshua was ‘on the back piggy back style walking slowly to the edge’ before sitting down.
They did not intervene because no one appreciated what was going to happen, he said.

The inquest heard from her father Peter Hooper, a Dartmoor builder, who said in his statement that his daughter was a ‘lovely, caring person’.

He said she met 52 year old Neil Patterson when she was 17 and had the two boys with him.
He said by Christmas 2012 ‘a little bit of the spark had gone’ from Kat and a week later she took an overdose of pills and went missing.

The two boys were taken into care and were returned to her two weeks later.

Mr Hooper said what happened in July was ‘a complete shock’ when she jumped off the rock killing Joshua and herself.
He said when he last spoke to her on the phone ‘she sounded alright’.

Police at the time said they know Kat and Joshua had left their home the day before their deaths and slept rough near a quarry overnight.

Malaysia Reports Suspected Ebola Case

 

Kuala Lumpur (Xinhua/NAN) A 24-year-old Zimbabwean student is currently under observation for Ebola in eastern Malaysian state of Sarawak, on Monday a local official in Health department said.

The student fell ill on Saturday and had been transferred to Sarawak General Hospital isolation ward from a private hospital.

Sarawak Public Health Assistant Minister, Jerip Susil, said that the student had no related signs to Ebola except for symptoms of high fever.

“We will know for sure if this is Ebola, once the test results is out within a week,’’ he added.

According to the report, the student never left the state, but came into contact with other foreign students who recently returned from their home country.

However, the Malaysian Health Ministry confirmed that there were no confirmed Ebola cases in the country.

Ebola: FG, NMA Agree On Schools' Resumption Date

The Federal Government and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have finally reached an agreement on the September 22 resumption of schools nationwide.

The Nation reports that the NMA agreed to the September 22 schools’ resumption date announced by the federal government at a stakeholders’ meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Education.

The association said the date was acceptable and that schools should resume “in order not to feed into the fear monster in the country.”

The NMA however gave some provisions to be followed to keep the country safe. They are:

- Maintain highest level of vigilance in the several entry points in the country.

- International Port Health Services should be put in the highest level of vigilance and preparedness to screen those coming into the country.

- Resuscitate infectious disease hospital in states.

- Ensure comprehensive screening of travelers.

All recent travelers to all the provinces of the current endemic countries of the Ebola disease – namely Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Sudan and Gabon-must be carefully scrutinized for the presence of the virus and epidemiologically treated accordingly.

Nigeria’s Ministry for Education had announced that all public and private schools would remain shut till October as part of the “preventive measures” against the Ebola virus, which was brought into Nigeria in July.

However after a review, the Federal Government moved the resumption date to 22 September, 2014.

This sparked controversy as the Nigerian doctors did not agree with the resumption date.

It’s been over a month since the All Progressives Congress’ candidate Rauf Aregbesola has won the governshorship election in Osun State. Naij.com guest writer Onagbenga Ahunso appeals to Governor Aregbesola, advising him on future actions.

“The re-election of Rauf Aregbesola as governor of Osun State is not without few implications. The self-styled “Omoluabi” and the APC government must understand this. Those who voted for change on August 9 are too significant to ignore. Their fears must be allayed. If, of course, Rauf Aregbesola and his party mean well for the “State of Virtue”.

“First, there is the fear that Rauf Aregbesola will end up spending his second term attending to his personal concerns. Rauf Aregbesola could rubbish whatever achievements he has recorded previously. This was the case under the immediate past administration of the state. Rauf Aregbesola should continue working on, improving his developmental projects.

“Next, neither he nor the APC should see his re-election as a victory of one religion over any others. Religious issues can be extremely volatile, especially when mixed with politics or administrative policies.

“Furthermore, the second term should not be considered the right time to implement obnoxious anti-workers policies. Those were introduced but tactically withdrawn in view of impending re-election. Some of them are: reduction in government workers’ retirement age and length of service, merging of schools and state-owned tertiary institutions, forceful retirement of workers on level 14 and above, imposing heavy taxes on salary earners and introducing other forms of taxes and rates etc. The bitter experiences of school administrators should not be allowed to continue. Grants should be released as and when due, not delayed or withheld.

“In addition, the policy of same uniform for all students in all the schools throughout the state is appalling, to say the least. Imagine that the students are exploiting the mix-up to commit atrocities of unimaginable dimension in schools other than their own because they cannot be recognized!

“Rauf Aregbesola should remember that the second term is not the time to take vengeance on those who chose not to vote for the APC. No voters should suffer from personal attacks, victimization, curses, or threats of  delayed salaries and stagnated promotion.

“And the final message for Governor Rauf Aregbesola and other APC enthusiasts. It was the people of Osun that did the voting. So the local politicians must not be sidelined. Nor the university/polytechnic graduates made cut grass for a mere pittance in the name of OYES [Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme]. What is needed from you and your APC government is dignifying jobs for the jobless.

“Rauf Aregbesola, since your re-election , everyone in Osun State has been praying  for God’s backing. We pray that your government will yield the desired fruits  of peace and prosperity for the populace.”

PDP, Groups Meet In Abuja Over Jonathan’s Declaration

Reports just coming in from Abuja, indicate that the stage is set for a crucial meeting of all groups campaigning for re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and top officials of the presidency scheduled to hold at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Tuesday, 16 September, 2014.

According to the P.M NEWS report, the event tagged ‘National Summit for Goodluck Support Groups’, which is being coordinated by Professor Ahmed Rufai Alkali, special adviser to the President on Political Affairs, is said to be a dress rehearsal to formal declaration of President Jonathan for 2015 presidential race expected to take place in few weeks time.

Speaking with newsmen last week, Akali stated that the event is a rare opportunity to experience an outpour of love by Nigerians from all walks of life for President Jonathan.

It was gathered that no fewer than 10 members from each of the 8,000 pro-Jonathan groups are billed to attend the ceremony scheduled to hold at the popular Eagle Square.

A source informed that the PDP’s bigwigs that will speak at the event include, former Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana; PDP national chairman, Adamu Mu’azu; Akwa Ibom state governor, Godswill Akpabio; former PDP chairman, Ahmadu Ali and former Senate President Ken Nnamani.

Also expected at the event are Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim; Senate Majority Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, former PDP acting national chairman, Bello Haliru Mohammed and PDP members in the two chambers of the National Assembly.

Another source stated that members of PDP National Executive Committee, Board of Trustees members, PDP governors and members of the Federal Executive Council are expected to use the occasion to call on Jonathan to declare his 2015 ambition while also listing his various achievements to convince Nigerians why the President should be given another term of office.

Buhari’s Supporters Unveil Posters In Lagos

Barely six months before the 2015 presidential elections, posters of former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari at the weekend, flooded the streets of Lagos.

The posters of the retired army general were seen pasted on pedestrian bridges as well as walls by the road sides at Yaba and Meiran areas of Lagos state, according to P.M NEWS report.

Though the All Progressives Congress, APC, is yet to announce its candidates for the 2015 presidential polls, apart from Buhari, other notable aspirants already rumoured to be jostling for the APC Presidential ticket includes: Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Senator Bukola Saraki, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar among others.

However, investigations revealed that other aspirants are already kicking against the idea being brokered by the Buhari Group to make the former Head of States the consensus candidate of the APC.

It was gathered at the weekend that the moves by some APC forces to make the former military ruler the party’s presidential candidate of the party for the 2015 presidential poll without going through an election is not going down well with the supporters of Kwankwaso, Saraki and Atiku camps.

An  unnamed APC insider was quoted in a national daily at the weekend admitting that any attempt to impose Buhari on the party as the presidential candidate would destroy the foundation and the credibility of the APC.

The source informed that the enraged aspirants were worried by signals coming from the Buhari camp which insist that the emergence of Buhari as a candidate “is a settled matter”.

According to the insider, disregarding democratic process in the choice of party presidential flag-bearer could drag APC into deep “and possibly irreparable political damage.”

The source also said that at no time was any decision taken by the party leadership to give anybody automatic ticket for the 2015 presidential elections.

He noted that the success of the modified open direct primaries for choosing its governorship candidate in Adamawa for the 11 October  election has given confidence to the APC leadership that it is a preferred option for choosing its candidates for the 2015 elections.

Two Nigerians and an Isreali arrested for smuggling $9.3m into SA

South African police are currently investigating two Nigerians and an Israeli citizen who tried to smuggle $9.3 million in cash into the country on September 5th.

According to South Africa's City Press newspaper, the money which was in bundles of unused $100 bills packed in three suitcase were transported in a small business jet, a bombadier Challenger 600 with a Nigerian crew and piloted by Captain Tunde Ojongbede. Continue...


The jet departed from Abuja and when it arrived South Africa, the money was discovered and when asked, the men said it was for the purchase of arms for the Nigerian security services.

Spokesperson of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Marika Muller in a statement said the money was seized at the Lanseria airport, northwest of Johannesburg

"The passengers' luggage was searched after Customs officials detected irregularities. The money was detained as it was undisclosed/undeclared and above the prescribed legal limit,"

South African airport security spokesman Solomon Makgale confirmed a police investigation was underway but declined to give details.

1. A man of God is not God, he is a man: Unfortunately, we treat our men of God as if they are spirits who don't live in human body. What do we expect when we saddle them with our numerous issues. Unfortunately, many are not wise to say no to church members whose lives will continue if they drop dead. Church members have academic, financial, and even marital problems, they go to the pastor as if the man is built to solve every problem and in our quest to prove that we are superstars, we also fail to embrace the use of professionals who are trained in these things because of our hidden fear of respect. What stops a man of God who knows his marriage is in danger to take a back seat and allow a church member whose marriage is a model take a message on a Sunday that marriage is meant to be discussed? You are not built to solve every problem.

2. Anointing does not give immunity to divorce: The same way anointing doesn't give immunity to sexual sins, it doesn't also give immunity to divorce. It takes more than anointing to make a marriage work. I have seen the people we refer to as unbelievers build a fantastic marriage why I have also seen loads of tongue-talking believers make a shipwreck of theirs. The most important ingredient to build a winning marriage isn't prayers, it is knowledge and if you don't have it, you can't pray it in. I tell people that your anointing wouldn't stop you from sleeping with church members if you have a sex problem. If you position yourself around babes consistently in the name of "My daughter in the lord" and you don't draw a critical line, it is only a matter of time. My story is everywhere on how I was a sex addict in church after being born again yet leading praise worship and leading people to Christ until I became real to myself and went to get help. Every counselor needs a counselor and every pastor needs a pastor who may not necessarily be  title carrying person because the problem with us is that in this part of the world, we believe that a laity isn't anointed as long as he doesn't pastor a large church. If you are beating your wife, don't pretend you don't have a problem, you need to get help from a psychologist or psychiatrist.

3. There is no relationship without communication and relaxation: So many men of God don't communicate with their spouses. You can't expect an abandoned flower to blossom without your attention. I think many of us saddle our wives with church work that they are not prepared for. I do not believe that because a man is a pastor necessarily means that his wife must be a Pastor Mrs. God's callings and gifting aren't by marriage. I don't understand the calling that will make a man of God remain in Nigeria while he sends his wife to Germany to pastor the branch of the church over there. Excuse me, you are a human being who needs emotional attention. Unfortunately, that is the reality in many ministries. You are a man of God on the pulpit but at home, you are a lover and a father to your children. So you might learn to drop the bible and Christianity on the altar so that you can communicate with your wife and your children in human language. I was invited to a meeting years back and I asked the Pastor's there the last time they had a dance with their spouses? I was shocked when they said it was during their wedding.

4. Isolation isn't spirituality: Jesus never isolated himself. As a matter of fact, he was found in everyday places like our present day shopping malls and movie houses. I see a lot of young pastors who have aged faster than they should be because of Isolation. Something tells us that we need to isolate ourselves to receive a word for a people who are being "pastored" only during the service because many of them are being influenced more by their favorite musician than their pastor. Don't allow church members turn you into who you are not because you don't want to hang out with your babe. They would spread your story when your marriage breaks down. When was the last time you met your pastor in a bus, mall, a restaurant or a cinema? As a matter of fact, when was the last time he was stuck in traffic and you saw him? If your answer is no, then most likely your pastor is a spirit. If a man wants to live in isolation, he should please not get married so that we can save the body of Christ all this embarrassment.

5. Wisdom is in the city square: If a man of God is inadequate on a particular subject, It is not shameful to get help. It is humility to look for help from people that have studied that particular subject. Something to learn from someone we have categorized as sinner. So when I hear someone make statements like there is nothing an unbeliever can teach me, I often ask who taught you how to speak English and understand Mathematics. Age and longevity in ministry is not the same as wisdom.

This pretty 26 year old woman, Chantae Gilman, is being accused of breaking into her neighbour's house and raping him.

A Seattle woman has been charged with raping a man who told cops he awoke in his bed to find his attacker sexually assaulting him while she had his hands pinned down, according to a police report. Chantae Gilman, 26, was charged this week in connection with the alleged June 2013 attack inside the 31-year-old victim’s Seattle apartment. Gilman has prior felony convictions for attempted robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle, as well as several misdemeanor convictions, according to court records.

As detailed in a probable cause affidavit prepared by a Seattle Police Department detective, the victim told cops that while he did not know Gilman, she was an acquaintance of another man who lives in his duplex. He described Gilman as “a drug user in the area.”

The man said that on the night of the attack he attended a birthday party for the neighbor whom Gilman knows. “Once arriving home he fell asleep on his bed,” Detective Roger Ishimitsu reported. “Victim slept very hard due to a long day.”

At 2 AM, the man told cops, he awoke to find the 5’ 7”, 240-pound Gilman on top of him. The victim said that his erect penis was inside Gilman, who had the man's “hands pinned down over his head,” as first reported by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

While Gilman ignored demands to get off him, the man said, he was “able to work his way out from underneath" her. Gilman, he added, had “told him to be quiet.” The man subsequently succeeded in pushing Gilman from his home. Later that day, he went to the Harborview Medical Center for a sexual assault examination.

Court records do not reveal how Gilman got into the victim’s apartment.

When questioned by cops, Gilman denied knowing the victim and said she did not recall being at his home or having sex with him. “She said that she has a mental illness and suffers from Bipolar disorder and Psychosis,” wrote Detective Ishimitsu.

A DNA sample collected from Gilman matched that of female DNA that was recovered from the victim’s sexual assault kit. As a result, Gilman was named in a September 8 criminal information charging her with second-degree rape for assaulting a victim who was “incapable of consenting to sexual intercourse by reason of being physically helpless.”

In a post last month on her Facebook page, Gilman reported, “I've got 2months sober and I'm 31 weeks pregnant.” Gilman, the mother of two young children, has struggled with substance abuse for the past several years, according to other Facebook messages. (3 pages)
