Ebola: Rivers, FG Clash On School Resumption Date

The Rivers State government and the Federal Government have clashed over the September 22, schools resumption date as the state government insisted that schools may not yet resume.

According to Vanguard, the state commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker, who made this known on Wednesday, explained that schools in the state may not resume because of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.

The commissioner also revealed that currently, there were about 340 persons under surveillance in the state. He said they want to be certain that the situation had been completely brought under control before schools would be allowed to resume.

In a related development, Nicholas Brunet, the Deputy Managing Director, Total E&P, Port Harcourt district, who donated an ambulance and two pickup trucks to the government on behalf of the oil company, described the outbreak of EVD in some West Africa countries as a big challenge to the world.

Meanwhile, Daily Independent had earlier reported that the commissioner for Health, Sampson Parker, said the state government, in collaboration with Emergency Operations Committee (EOC) on Ebola in the state, has earmarked a whooping sum of N1 billion to combat the dreaded Ebola virus disease in the state.

The EOC comprise state Ministry of Health and international partners, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) and Centre for Disease Control (CDC).

Meanwhile, Dan Nwomeh, the Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the Minister of Health in his tweets below confirmed that Ebola Virus has been brought under control in Nigeria.The deadly Ebola virus was brought into the country by the late American-Liberian Patrick Sawyer. It would be recalled that Federal Government had earlier announced that primary and secondary schools across the country should resume academic activities on 22 September, 2014. The disease has so far killed seven people across the country. The Nigerian Ministry of Health on September 2, 2014, announced the death of an elderly woman who contracted the deadly virus in Port Harcourt, while on admission in the same hospital wherelate Dr Enemoah died.

SCOAN Has History Of Collapses - Website

Following the September 12 tragedy at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), more revelations keep appearing.

The building belonging to the church collapsed Frirday afternoon killing scores of people. After the incident numerous allegations were made in terms of what could cause the collapse.

It would be recalled that the building had initially 2 storeys and it was later reconstructed into a 5-storey building. After the tragedy the Lagos State Government claimed they had not provided approval for the change of structure. It was alleged that the collapse could occur as a result of the move.

However the SCOAN founder Pastor T.B. Joshua said it was a terror attack and disclosed thefootage, which shows events before and after collapse. In the video it is clearly seen that some aircraft was hovering over the building four times within short period of time before the guest house fell down.

Meanwhile new details of this story have surfaced. Which is no allegation, but the information provided on the SCOAN official website. According to the page, the SCOAN had 3 different locations in the past, and there were serious troubles with the church building. Read the paragraph taken as it is from www.scoan.org:

“The physical structure of The SCOAN has gone through different stages. Each stage served a purpose! Before moving to our present position, The SCOAN has had three previous locations. The roof of the first church was blown off by a storm, the second church was washed away by a flood while the third church also collapsed due to severe weather conditions. Shall we say all these happened without God’s knowledge? No. In every situation, God is still saying something. Today, The SCOAN is an architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Ikotun-Egbe, Lagos.”

Still, the investigation into the cause of collapse has started and the official results are yet to be provided.

Fayose Accuses Fayemi Of Funds Divertion

Less than a month before the expiration of the tenure of Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, the state governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose has accused him of diverting workers’ salaries to pay government contractors.

According to a statement made public on Wednesday, 17 September, 2014, in Ado Ekiti, by Fayose’s Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor elect alleged that workers in the state were being made to suffer unjustly as the state government was diverting funds meant to pay their salaries for the payment of contractors and severance allowance political appointees by Fayemi.

“The governor does not need to rob Peter to pay Paul. He owes workers in the state backlog of salary arrears and he has not paid them.

“Instead of paying workers, the administration is focusing on paying government contractors. The word of God says a labourer is worth his wages and those who are working for the state must not be denied their dues.

“The government must not waste further time in paying these hapless workers and save their families from hunger.

“If the government is using statutory allocations and other revenue to pay contractors and the severance benefit of the governor’s appointees, then what stops the state from paying workers?,” the statement read.

Governor Fayemi, reacting to Fayose’s claim through his Commissioner for Information, Tayo Ekundayo, denied the allegation, saying he knew nothing about such diversion because his administration would not give priority to contractors over workers.

The incumbent governor stated that he was not aware of any contractor being given top priority insisting that the government would ensure that it paid according to availability of funds.

“We have said it several times that we have paucity of funds because of dwindling money from the Federal Government.

“Beside, the arrangement we had with banks to pay salaries was thwarted by the Peoples Democratic Party. But I can assure you that we will pay according to the available funds at our disposal,” the statement read in parts.

It would be recalled that Governor Fayemi of the All Progressice Congress, APC, was defeated by Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the gubernatorial polls conducted in Ekiti State in July.

Rwandan Senate President Resigns after being Accused of Incompetence

Kigali (dpa/NAN) – The President of the Rwandan Senate, Jean-Damascene Ntawukuriryayo, resigned on Wednesday after he was accused of incompetence.

He was succeeded by his deputy, Bernard Makuza.

Ntawukuriryayo cited personal reasons for the decision to stand down.

He resigned after senators accused him of creating administrative blockages in the upper house of parliament, and of illegally hiring staff.

Ntawukuriryayo heads the Social Democratic Party, the country’s second-biggest party, which is in a coalition government with President Paul Kagame‘s Rwandan Patriotic Front.

Some analysts said his departure could be linked to his close relations with former Prime Minister Pierre Habumuremyi who was sacked in July.

Habumuremyi has denied allegations that he had connections with the Congo-based rebel movement Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda which has staged attacks in Rwanda.

Graphic Photos: Dead Bodies Of Babies Discovered In Benin City

Residents of 2nd East Circular Road, Benin City, Edo state capital on Wednesday morning, discovered the dead bodies of three babies abandoned along the road.

PMNews reports that two out of the three dead bodies which had already started decomposing, was wrapped and ‎put in a cardboard box under a palm tree along the busy road, while the third baby, a girl of about a year and two months old was found 30 meters from the others along Uwa street junction.



Residents and passersby were seen gathered ‎around one of the dead bodies, giving different accounts of the inhuman act.

In a reaction, one Victor Imonitie, who said he resides on East Circular road, suggested that it was time government set up a team to be monitoring young pregnant women across the country.

“I think the government should begin registering all pregnant women in the country and monitor them for at least two years after giving birth, because any of these young girls getting pregnant indiscriminately could do such things,” of the Nigerian police attached to Esigie Division later arrived the scene to evacuate the decomposing corpses.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old woman named Esohe Ogbeiwi was allegedly roasted by her ex-lover, Peter Osayi to death in Edo state after a dispute.

It would be recalled that on June 17, 2014, a 29-year-old woman was on September 11, 2014, arrested by the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences for faking pregnancy which she used in deceiving people and soliciting for alms.

John Travolta Addresses Ex-pilot Gay sex Claims for the First Time

Earlier this year, a former employee of Hollywood actor John Travolta, Douglas Gotterba, claimed the two had been in a sexual relationship when he worked for Travolta’s aviation company during the 80s.

Ebola: NAFDAC to Prosecute Professor who Claimed Ewedu is a Cure

In the midst of the Ebola outbreak, several individuals have claimed to have the panacea for the disease.  Kolanut, salt, Ewedu, and other food items have been rumoured to cure Ebola.



The National  Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has vowed to crack down on people who make such erroneous claims, beginning with the professor who claimed Ewedu can cure Ebola.

Director General of NAFDAC, Paul Orhii made the announcement yesterday,Vanguard reports.

Orhii reportedly stated that NAFDAC would arrest and prosecute a Nigerian Professor of Ophthalmology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH) who made the false claims about Ewedu.

“One consequence of these unsupported and possibly fraudulent claims is that people may be misled into a false sense of invincibility on account of eating Ewedu or bitter kola and drop their guards. This is a national embarrassment and the Agency will not take such uncorroborated claims by supposedly learned people lightly… NAFDAC will immediately arrest and prosecute any Nigerian making such unverified claims as that could mislead the public,” he said.

In its efforts to crack down on individuals exploiting the Ebola situation, NAFDAC has also arrested three Nigerian business men who imported fake Ebola kits and expired hand sanitizers into the country.

BREAKING NEWS: Insurgents Kill 15 & Injure 34 in Kano College Invasion

An explosion has occurred at Federal College of Education in Kano.

Vanguard reports that gunmen also fired shots sporadically on the college campus.

Armed security personnel were reportedly heading to the college.

The Police in Kano on Wednesday confirmed the death of 15 persons, including two suicide bombers, at the Federal College of Education (FCE), Kano, according to NAN.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Aderinle Shinaba, disclosed this shortly after visiting the scene of the incident.

Shinaba said 34 others, mostly students and lecturers, sustained various degrees of injury during the attack.

He said the suicide bombers had before their arrival to the institution, exchanged gunfire with some security operatives along Kafar Famfo-BUK road.

“After the exchange of gunfire, they emerged at the college lecture theatre and detonated two explosives.

“There was another insurgent, who was carrying AK 47 rifle and explosives.”

He said that one of security operatives was able to shoot him and the explosive went off and killed him.

“We have been able to recover some of the AK47 rifles and magazines used by the insurgents.

“So far, 15 people were dead, while 34 others that sustained injuries are currently receiving medical attention in the hospital,” the commissioner said.

He said security had been beefed up in the area, adding, “we are going to keep our men on ground to enhance security in the school,’’ he said.

Delta State Lawmaker Sent out of Assembly for “Indecent Dressing”

 

Keston Okoro, a member of the Delta State House of Assembly was reportedly sent out of the Assembly floor yesterday for being “indecently dressed.”

A speaker of the house Peter Onwunsanya reportedly gave the order,Leadership reports. He insisted that Okoro should not be re-admitted into the house until he learned to dress decently.

“My dear Speaker and members of this House, as honorable members, we are here to work according to the rules and regulations of this House. Therefore, let me draw your attention to the sitting position of the member representing Udu constituency and to say his mode of dressing is a total disrespect to this honorable House. Our mode of dressing should depict us as responsible members of the House, representing the people in our respective constituencies,” said Daniel Mayuku, one of the House members.


According to reports, Okoro was reprimanded in accordance with Rule 57 (11) of the House, which states “that when a member is not properly dressed, he should be sent out until he does the needful.”

The alleged “indecent” outfit he wore was not disclosed.

Ebola: 340 Cases Under Surveillance in Rivers State

The Rivers Commissioner for Health, Sampson Parker, on Wednesday said there were 340 Ebola Virus disease (EVD) cases under surveillance in the state.

Parker made the remark in Port Harcourt during a sensitization workshop at Ogu, in Ogu/Bolo local government area.

He said the state government was not in a hurry to reopen primary and secondary schools because of the situation.

Parker stressed that government would announce a date for re-opening of public schools after assessing the situation in the next few weeks.

The commissioner advised people of the area to imbibe a healthy life style to avert contracting the disease.

Parker urged them to always wash their hands with soap and water.

“We want schools to reopen as soon as possible, but we are still assessing the situation before we can do anything,’’ he added.

He called on the people to always report cases of deaths and stop the habit of burying dead bodies in a hurry.

The commissioner urged people of the area to alert local government disease surveillance officers as soon as there were cases of deaths.

“As a matter of fact, every death must be reported to local government health officials before anybody can touch it,’’ Parker said.

Immigration Arrests Suspected Human Traffic Kingpin in Enugu

Enugu (NAN) – The Nigeria Immigration Service, Enugu State Command, says it has nabbed one Koffi Hassan, a Sierra Leonean, who specializes in trafficking women out of Nigeria for prostitution.

The Immigration Comptroller, Bashir Ismail, disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with NAN in Enugu.

He said that Hassan, an alleged human traffic kingpin, who had been on their wanted list, was arrested following a tip-off.

“Human trafficking has been a challenge in this part of the country.

“Just last month we succeeded in arresting one notorious human trafficker called Koffi, who has been involved in human trafficking of women and involving them in prostitution.

“We were able to arrest that kingpin. We have now forwarded him for prosecuting. After prosecution we will definitely repatriate him.

“That’s a great achievement for us; we have been challenged for this kind of things around this area.

“And that will signal to those who are involved in that to desist from it. Victims that are with him confessed what he uses them for and NAPTIP has succeeded in reuniting them with their families,” he said.

Ismail said that the command had embarked on the repatriation of irregular aliens in the state.

He said that such people had caused security breaches in the state and had become threats to their host communities.

“The service decided to embark on regular repatriation and removal of such kind of citizens that are among us.

“So far between January and now we have removed over 98 people out of Enugu. We have to be on it and to be fair and be frank we have been getting great support from Enugu State government.

“These people we remove are from our efforts to go and flush them out from the communities in which they live. They have become a threat to them.

“Then we also get people referred to us due to our synergy from other security agencies. Whenever they have such kind of people arrested among other criminals, they do refer to us then we take action.

“Most of the nationals are from Niger Republic, Togo and Mali and a few Beninois and the Cameroonians,” he said.

He said that citizens from West African were entitled to stay in any member state under certain regulations backed up by prescribed documents.

Ismail said that those without the required documents would be vulnerable to manipulation and could commit criminal offenses without records.
