Beautiful 28yr old nurse hangs herself after suffering chronic skin disease

A health visitor with a first class honours degree in nursing was found hanged after she became tormented by her severe skin condition.

Hollie McEwen, a dedicated professional, first suffered psoriasis as a 12-month-old but it eased with treatment. However, it later reappeared due to stress and the 28-year-old became so depressed she took her own life at home.

 

Her father Andrew told an inquest: 'Her condition played a large part in what she decided to do.

'She was a beautiful, vibrant young woman who felt she couldn't deal with the condition. She felt this was the only way out.'

The Doncaster hearing was told she had suffered from bulimia as a teenager. Her family believed the eating disorder stemmed from her ongoing issues with her skin condition.

Her mother Wendy said: 'Her skin condition played a large part in her problems as a teenager and when older I feel this was at the root of all the problems.'

Hollie's body was found just two days after she had sought medical help for her depression.

She had spent a long time writing several letters to loved ones which were found in a bin.

Her father, who saw her the evening before the tragedy said: 'She was a happy, young woman who enjoyed her work and social life but she kept everything very close to herself. We had a good laugh on that last night and there was no indication she was unhappy.'

Mrs McEwen said her daughter, who lived in Scawsby, Doncaster, had treatment for psoriasis over the last few years involving hospital stays and steroids after suffering anxiety attacks.

Hollie had enjoyed a family holiday in Turkey but was 'down' after being given an anti-depression drug by her GP which failed to lighten her mood.

'She was an intelligent, determined and organised young woman,' she said. 'I told her to keep going with the tablets and give it time.'

When told about her daughter's death she said: 'I was in absolute shock. Her death has left a large hole in our family. I still can't understand why this has happened.'

Hollie's brother Andrew told the inquest: 'She was a happy young woman who enjoyed her work and social life. She kept everything very close to herself.'

He said there was no indication that she was unhappy the evening before she died. He added: 'As a teenager she was always conscious of her skin condition and it worried her greatly.'

Hollie's neighbour Elaine Lunn found a note from her on the morning of Friday, May 23 asking her to call the emergency services so Hollie's family would not find her body.

She said: 'I believe she had planned it. There was nothing to suggest prior that she was going to do anything like this. I feel totally distraught.'

She added: 'She was a very attractive young woman. She was energetic, thoughtful and caring and studied to further her career. She was very bright and intelligent.'

Nurse and friend Angelina Deighton, who trained with Hollie at Sheffield Hallam University, said she knew her psoriasis had worried Hollie and she said she was having treatment and counselling.

'She was always the life and soul of our friendship group,' she said. 'She was always bubbly. She had a boyfriend for a few months in 2013 but it fizzled out and she wasn't concerned about it.

'Lately she described being tired, down and just not coping. She had been to her GP for anti-depressants but she didn't think counselling would help her and she tried to help herself.

'I tried time and time again to get her to seek help. She had many friends who thought she would never do anything like this.'

Behavioural psychotherapist Jessica Dunn, who had a session with Hollie just two days before she died, said Hollie had started to feel anxious and overwhelmed at having to plan a friend's hen party.

'She was well presented with immaculate hair and make-up,' said Miss Dunn. She had 'dark thoughts' but had no intention of carrying them out. 'She told me "I wouldn't put my family through that".'

Hollie had been avoiding her friends and not socialising because her mood was so low. After breaking down in tears in the witness stand Miss Dunn said: 'I had no concern for her safety.'

4 months after being released from prison, man gets re-arrested for robbery

An ex-convict who was released from prison four moths ago after spending 7 years in kirikiri has been arrested again by men of the Lagos state Police command after he and his gang snatched a car in the Yaba area of Lagos.

According to Vanguard, Faruk Lawal and his gang snatched a car from its owner while the owner was having sex to a woman inside his car along Morrocco street in the Alade area of Yaba in Lagos.

Parading Faruk and one of his gang members at the state Police headquarters in Ikeja yesterday Sept. 23rd, the state Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, said the young men where arrested after a distress call was put across to them of a car theft incident at the Yaba axis of Lagos

"Two armed robbers, named Babatunde Makinde and Faruk Lawal, were arrested. A search conducted on the vehicle led to the recovery of one double barrel pistol, two single barrel pistols and 28 live cartridges. The suspects confessed to have snatched the vehicle from its owner at gunpoint in Alade area of Yaba few hours before they were arrested and that the third gun belongs to one Dayo, a member of their gang who narrowly escaped arrest. Investigation is still ongoing with a view to arresting the fleeing gang members.”

While being interrogated, Faruk expressed sadness he was heading back to prison.

"I never wanted to go with them. If I had listened to my instinct, I would not have been involved. It means I am returning to prison where I spent seven years. I was released just four months ago with a promise to turn a new leaf" he said

60-Year-Old Man Defiles Minor In Edo

Officials of Edo State Police Command on Tuesday paraded a 60-year-old man, identified as Friday Akpan, for allegedly raping a 9-year-old daughter of his employer.

The state’s Police Commissioner, Foluso Adebanjo, who made this known to TheNation, said the suspect, who was employed as a gateman at the residence of the victim, lured the minor into his room and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

He said during interrogation that the suspect lamented his actions and revealed that the act would have been averted if the victim had shouted.

Similarly, the CP also paraded another rape suspect, Joseph Okoye, who was arrested at Igarra community in Akoko-Edo local government area of the state for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl. He said Okoye’s act was exposed after the victim complained of vaginal pains to her mother.

Adebanjo, while parading several other rapists, gave their names as Isreal Osarobo, Sunday Irhiakpolor, Monday Airuoje, Frank Ekhator, John Oyeke, Akhimien Ehijie, Sunday Paul, Abraham Ikhakon and Edekin Ojaogbe.

The CP said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Meanwhile, the police also arrested a 30-year old man, Olaniyan Oluwakayode, who reportedly raped a 20-year-old girl in his apartment at Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area Lagos, and uploaded pictures of her taken during the act on the Internet.

Wife Slashes Husband’s Genitals In Delta

Delta State Police Command has arrested of a 42-year-old jealous housewife, Esther (surname withheld), for allegedly cutting off her husband’s genitals.

DSP Celestina Kalu, the state’s police public relations officer, who made this known to Leadership, said the incident happened in Ugbolu community close to Asaba, the state capital.

The force spokesperson said the suspect committed the act during a fight that accompanied her husband’s alleged interest in other women.

Kalu said the suspect appeared from the bush and engaged the man in a physical fight, during which she allegedly used razor to slash his ‘male organ.’

It was gathered that the couple had always fought over the husband’s lifestyle and infidelity, with the suspect threatening to spill his blood if he refuses to change.

The force spokesman, who revealed that the suspect had already confessed to the crime, said she would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.

It would be recalled that on May 9, 2014, a 35 year-old woman, Fausat Yakub, was remanded in prison custody by an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court for allegedly pouring a dangerous liquid substance on her ex-husband’s genitals.

Quack Doctor In Trouble Over Patient's Death

A quack doctor identified as Femi Olabisi Akindele, has landed himself in trouble after a 26-year-old woman, Bose Owoyele, allegedly died in his hospital, Duro Doluwa Medical Clinic and Maternity Home, located at Ijoko-Ota road, Interpol Bus stop, Sango Ota, Ogun State, southwest Nigeria.

According to a report published by P.M NEWS, Akindele, 48, was arraigned at Ogun State Magistrates’ Court 2, presided over by Chief Magistrate S.T. Bello (Mrs) at Ota.

Reading the one count-charge to the accused person in Yoruba language, the prosecutor, Sergeant Ita Ita, said: “That you Olufemi Olabisi Akindele ‘m’ on 22/7/2014 at about 1345hrs at Duro Doluwa Clinic, along Ijoko Road, Sango, Ota in Sango Ota Magisterial District did unlawfully kill one Bose Owoyele ‘f’ aged 26 by carrying out surgical operation when you are not a Medical Doctor and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 316 (3) and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006”.

After rejecting the accused plea in view of the nature of the charge, Magistrate Bello ordered that Akindele should be remanded in prison custody pending advice from Department of Public Prosecution, DPP.

The case was adjourned till 14 November, 2014.

However, it was gathered that the victim, a mother of three, allegedly died with pregnancy at the accused hospital on 22 July, 2014, after she was admitted for jaundice treatment for four days.

Speaking to newsmen on the death of his wife, the deceased’s husband, Olasunkanmi Owoyele, an auto mechanic resident at 27, Ogo-Oluwa Street, Interpol, stated that he went to the hospital on Friday night with his pregnant wife where she had been earlier treated and was allegedly given injections.

Olasunkanmi explained that the late Bose was rushed back to the hospital at about 5.30 a.m. on Saturday when her condition became critical over night and the doctor collected N3,000 out of the N6,000 charged for drip and other treatment.

He added that after collecting the money, the doctor did not allow any of her relations to see her again until the fateful Tuesday morning when he forced his way into the ward where the deceased was admitted and found her in a critical condition.

“I called the doctor’s attention to her condition and I was told that I wouldn’t have met her alive if not for the blood transfusion he carried out on her the previous night and I was asked to pay N20,000 for the blood,” he said.

Olasunkanmi further explained: “I left the hospital helplessly while other family members were also denied access to her despite her condition, only to receive a phone call from someone later that my wife was dead.”

It was gathered from the spokesman for the deceased’s family, Dare Ibikunle,  that a surgery-like cut and stitches were discovered at the lower part of  deceased abdomen before the matter was reported at Sango Police Division.

The fake doctor was said to be arrested and detained at the station before he was transferred to Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Investigation revealed that the fake doctor claimed that the cut was as a result of his effort to bring out the foetus inside the victim, claiming that Bose was a Muslim who should not be buried with pregnancy.

However, a source disclosed that similar incident had occurred at the same hospital in October 2013.

“The next five months will be very tough. Next election is going to be different and next year is going to be tough because APC is ready for change in Nigeria. We will stop corruption; no more will anybody put government money into private pockets” Buhari said.

Speaking also at the event, the party’s National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, who received the defectors accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of giving Nigeria a bad name. He said Nigeria is terribly asleep and is having a serious nightmare.

The party’s national chairman, who is also the former governor of Edo State, further stated that Nigeria will continue to experience nightmare except the ruling PDP is voted out of power.

“There is hope for Nigeria if Nigerians wake up fast and vote for APC which is becoming the fastest growing party in Nigeria, and has come to remedy the ills meted on the country”Odigie-Oyegun said.

DSS Arrests NTA Reporter Over Bribery Allegation

A 28-year-old staff of the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Sampson Oghenedoro, has been arrested and paraded by the Department of State Services, DSS, Niger State command, for allegedly demanding N50 million from the state government to stop him from broadcasting a story on alleged fraudulent activities within the government.

According to P.M NEWS report, Oghenedoro, who works with the NTA in Asaba, Delta state, as a producer/cameraman, operates under the name Fajiro Oliver, was paraded on Monday, 22 September, 2014, in Minna, Niger State capital.

Speaking on the matter, DSS director in Niger State, Dr. Larry Obiagwu, said that the suspect was picked up by his men at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while on his way to Minna to collect the said amount.

Obiagwu informed that Sampson and two others, Stanley Gene and Francis Arinze, both now at large, co-founded the Secret Reporters Group (SRG) with the alleged sole objective of blackmailing government officials and heads of organisations for pecuniary benefits.

He said that in July and August the suspect told top officials of the Niger state government on a threat to expose fraudulent activities taking place within the government or be paid N50 million to drop the story.

However, the suspect, while speaking with journalists, denied knowledge of the alleged demand of N50 million from the state government, saying he was only on his way to Minna to balance his story.

OPC Leader Warns South West On Boko Haram

The leader of Odua People’s Congress, OPC, Otunba Gani Adams, has warned over the possibility of the Boko Haram insurgency to spill over to western Nigeria if not properly curtailed.

According to Sunnewsonline, Adams made this statement while speaking at the Oranyan Festival held at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi recently.

He said: “Indication is rife that Boko Haram has entered South West. Evidence of their incursion into the zone was the explosion in Apapa, Lagos, of which, Shekau, the Islamist sect leader, claimed responsibility.”

It was also gathered that the OPC leader advised political leaders in the South West to proffer a drastic solution to curtail the Boko Haram menace in the region.

He berated the governors in the South West for their nonchalant attitudes towards the Boko Haram menace, saying none of them had called him, as the leader of the OPC, to discuss proactive measures to curtail the spill over.

“We need to organize a stakeholders’ meeting on security in order to chart a way forward on how to secure our region against Boko Haram.

Is TB Joshua Banned In South Africa Forever?????? Read more

The African National Congress Youth League has said they do not want Prophet T.B. Joshua, General Overseer of the Synagogue of All Nations (SCOAN) to be allowed into South Africa.

Their reaction follows Joshua’s announcement on Sunday, to visit the country once every month in memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic collapse of a guest house belonging to the church on September 12.

In a statement by its spokesman, Bandile Masuku, the group said they would make sure such trip never comes to pass.

Stressing that Joshua would not be welcomed, the youth wing of the party further warned the South African government not to issue a visa to him if he applies for such, Punch reports.

The ANC youths said: “T.B. Joshua should not be allowed to come to South Africa until we know what happened to our fellow countrymen at his church.

“We will make sure we engage with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to make sure they do not issue him with a South African visa.”

About 350 South Africans were believed to be visiting the Synagogue church in the Ikotun neighbourhood of Lagos, at the time of the collapse.

About 115 people were said to have lost their lives in the Synagogue collapse and out of that number, 84 were reportedly South Africans.

The prophet had described those who lost their lives as martyrs.

Meanwhile, the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni has disclosed that to fast track the release of the 84 corpses of South Africans at the Isolo General Hospital morgue in Lagos, the South African forensic team yesterday began collecting the fingerprints and DNA samples that would aid investigations.

He said finger prints and the DNA samples were expected to be sent to Pretoria tomorrow to help confirm the identity of the South Africans who died.

T.B. Joshua is one of the popular pastors in Nigeria and he is referred to by followers across the world as “The Prophet” or “The Man of God”.

Following the collapse, T.B. Joshua issued a condolence message to the families of those who lost their lives, especially the South Africans.

A South African opposition party, Democratic Alliance has however threatened to sue the prophet over the deaths of some of its nationals at the church building collapse.
