Nigerian Army Plans Massive Attack On Boko Haram

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, said the army would soon launch a massive military offensive to end insurgency in the North-East.

Minimah made this known when he addressed troops of 2 Brigade Port Harcourt at a two-day visit to army formations and units in Rivers on Sunday, 24 August, 2014.

According to him, military hardware will soon arrive into the country in furtherance of the Federal Government resolve to end Boko Haram activities.

“The equipments ordered by the Federal Government will soon be coming into the nation’s shores in a few weeks time.

“As soon as the equipments come in, we will launch a major offensive toward ending this madness of insurgency in the North-East of the country,” he said.JRndNKSZGfyzxKDuaB0dcwLjNigerian soldiers

Minimah said that under President Goodluck Jonathan the army had witnessed significant improvement in personnel welfare and institutional capacity to confront the nation’s security challenges.

He said that efforts were also being made to reduce oil theft in the Niger Delta in response to new techniques devised by oil thieves to sabotage the nation’s economy.

“We cannot say we will completely stamp out oil theft in one day, but then the greater act in pursuing oil thieves is ongoing, and we will see greater result with time,” the Chief of Army Staff said.
Minimah, who also inaugurated six blocks of 28 flats and a block of five flats officers’ quarters built by the 2 Brigade, said the project would reduce accommodation deficit in the barracks.

He commended the Commanding Officer of the 29 Battalion, Lt.-Col. Olusegun Oladuntoye, for building an ultra-modern state-of-the-art Quarter Guard for the brigade.

The leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, also on Sunday released a video where he claimed the insurgent group has taken over Gwoza town in Borno state.

The Islamist sect has staged series of attack in the southern city of Borno lately killing hundreds of people and displacing thousands of others from their villages to neighbouring towns.

No Going Back On Okada Ban, Lagos Commissioner Says

Contrary to recent rumours, the Lagos State Government has said it has no intention of reversing the restriction of commercial motorcyclists from plying major highways and bridges in the state.

This statement was made on Sunday, 24 August, 2014, by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, saying that the government was convinced that the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012 was made in public interest.

“This administration does not have the intention to reverse itself on this important issue now or in the immediate future.

“The reason is simple. By enacting the Law of 2012, we have made considerable gains in discharging the primary responsibility of government to our people in the area of protection of life and property.

“Also, the decision to regulate the use of commercial motorcycles on our highways was not a unilateral decision, but a response to popular demands by members of the public who have been at the receiving end in their daily interactions with the okada operators,” Idirogba said.

Condemning those saying motorcyclists were banned in Lagos, the commissioner explained that there were 9,100 roads in Lagos State, saying that motorcycles below 200cc were restricted on only 475 of the roads.

“This represents 5.6 per cent of roads in Lagos. The result and impact of this decision have been tremendous. Prior to the enactment of the law, we were recording an average of 16 motorcycle-related deaths across the state every month and an average of 646 injured patients from motorcycle-related accidents at states secondary and tertiary hospitals.QEIX57QXYXjpD2psTKIF4WpbLagos Commissioner for Information, Lateef Idirogba, left, at a press briefing held recently.

“As of March this year, our statistics show only 1 to 2 motorcycle-related deaths and less than 100 motorcycle accident related injuries in a month,” he added.

The commissioner said information going round that the government wanted to reverse the restriction was false, adding the Fashola-led administration was the only government that had given recognition to the use of motorcycle as a means of commercial transportation through the instrument of the law and regulations meant to protect the riders and the citizens.

Ibirogba said those sponsoring the information were plotting to snatch ballot boxes with the use of okadas during the 2015 general election.

“We encourage our okada riders to go about their lawful duty by obeying all the provisions of the traffic law,” the commissioner added.

It would be recalled that some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly last week sponsored a motion seeking to a review of the traffic law.

Political, economic, social and security reasons have been adduced to either support or condemn the move by the state lawmakers who are pushing to cut down on the number of roads the commercial motorcycles are currently disallowed to operate.

For the ten lawmakers sponsoring the motion, they include Ajibayo Adeyeye who is the House majority leader, Sanai Agunbiade (Ikorodu 1), Bisi Yusuf (Alimosho 1), Moshood Oshun (Lagos Mainland 2), Rotimi Olowo (Somolu 1), Mudashiru Obasa (Agege 1), Adebimpe Akinsola (Ikorodu 2), Hakeem Masha (Lagos Island 1), Olumuyiwa Jimoh (Apapa 2) and Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2), the motive is basically to put paid to what they see as continued harassment of ‘hapless Okada operators’ by security agents particularly the police who are fully taking advantage of the law to exploit and extort the ‘Okada’ operators.

The lawmakers while making case for the review argued that the police were misapplying the law. According to them, the traffic law was aimed at reducing recklessness on the part of road users and not for the purpose of exploitation by those to implement it.

They contended that given the way it is being applied, the law enforcement agents including the police and LASTMA have gone out of control and this should not be allowed to continue.

According to the lawmakers, their move is motivated by constant complaints from the ‘Okada’ operators in their constituencies about police harassments and intimidation even on approved routes, just as they called on Fashola to reach out to Umar Manko, the state commissioner of police, on the need to urgently call his men to order.

They argued that it has become imperative to revisit the list of the restricted routes so they could be amended where possible to avoid the conflicts between the police and commercial motorcycle operators.

BN Health & Fitness: The Ultimate Butt Exercise with Adagurl

Ada-Ari-600x397One of the top questions I get at the gym is how to grow and firm up the butt. There are tons of machines at the gym, and a plethora of articles you can read that offer advice on targeting the glutes. But most people are intimidated and confused by all the information being thrown at them.

Well here’s an interesting solution – a fun and effective way to get the results you want. I’ll call it the Nigerian butt lift. Below are two workout routines set to some great Nigerian songs. Not only will you enjoy the music, but you will also feel your butt firm up during the creative squat and lunge combinations.

Get together with friends, and try either of these. Enjoy the power and focus in the REPETE workout and focus on sitting low into each squat and lunge. Or rock on to DOROBUCCI as you work your butt while increasing your heartrate. You can do either of these workouts with no equipment. I guarantee you will still feel the results.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think

My Marriage Lasted for Less Than a Month – Princess

Newly-weds-Adesola-and-Princesss-2

Comedienne Princess Damilola has opened up once again about her failed marriage, telling Punch that her marriage lasted less than a month and she fell ill and had to be hospitalized after her husband left her. Excerpts from the interview below…
You didn’t say what was wrong with you that you had to be hospitalized?
But you already know. We thank the Lord. The most important thing is that I am alive and better. I appreciate life more. But this one you are asking, e no reach make I sick? After my husband left after our wedding, was it not enough reason for me to be sick? Ah! The Lord is our strength.
Why are you making fun of this?
Ah! I am telling you the truth o. The truth is that we all have challenges in our lives. I have always believed that the challenge is not the issue but how you get up and get over it. I was very down last year. It was my low moment. But with the help of God and the support of my family and friends, I am here now. I am happy.
Are you no longer depressed?
I was never depressed. I reacted like every normal human being would react if she embarks on a lifetime journey and it doesn’t go as she planned it. But God has a reason for everything.
Are there times you wish you weren’t a celebrity especially when you are linked with controversies?
The only time I felt bad about my fame was when my marriage ended. I felt if I weren’t this popular; people wouldn’t have talked about it. So many marriages crash on a daily basis but you will not hear about them. Some people have been married five times but you will not hear their gist because they are not in the eye of the public. People didn’t know that the marriage had broken up until December when I felt I was strong enough to handle the publicity that it generated.
Were you shocked with the kind of publicity it generated?
I was shocked! People called me from all parts of the world including China. Some people cried while some people felt happy. Some guys said they were happy my marriage ended. Some said they were not happy that I even married the guy. Some said I looked older than him. Some said my marriage shouldn’t have ended just like that. People talked and talked. But the only time you know your marriage is successful is when you live with your partner and God calls one of you home. Marriage of 30 years can still break up. It is a bad thing for a marriage to breakup. So you can imagine the unhappiness the parties involved would be going through. Nobody is happy when his/her marriage ends. Some people see me outside and ask, ‘your marriage has ended, how do you feel?’ I will answer them that I am jumping up or how else do they expect me to feel? Nonsense! A comedian once said that ‘complete’ and ‘finish’ appear to have the same meaning but they are not the same. If you marry the right person, you are complete but if you marry the wrong person, you are finished.
Were you in love with him in the first place?
I got married to somebody who I was in love with. At that time, he also said he loved me. Unfortunately, the marriage ended too soon.
Why?
It was due to irreconcilable differences. It is not a thing of joy. I don’t think we should celebrate sadness and bad news. We should be more sensitive. No marriage should end but peradventure it does, don’t make a mockery of that person. You are not even mocking the person, you are mocking God.
Are you giving it another shot?
No! Me ke? Let us struggle first and make some money. In any case, I think I should marry a Chinese or an Indian. If many people agree that I should marry a Chinese, then I will go ahead. But a Japanese might be better. Japanese products are strong and reliable.
Is your ex-husband still your friend?
I don’t think you should call him my ‘ex-husband’ because we were together for less than one month. An ex- husband is somebody you marry and after three years or more, you separate. Anyway, I don’t know where he is. We have moved on.
Are you happy?
I am happier now and I am better. I was happy before, the only thing that got me sad was that the marriage ended. I did one wedding and it didn’t go well and I am alive. I should thank God. A lot of people lose their spouses just after a week of marriage. As long as you are alive, have hope. If God says I should marry again, I will follow His will. I have made my own attempt, let God make His own. I am sure he (ex-husband) is okay anywhere he is anyway.
Wasn’t the break-up your fault?
No. it wasn’t my fault. I can’t really say it was his fault too. It was just irreconcilable differences. We met and we were in love and we quickly got married. Maybe we got married too quickly but I have seen people who got married a month after they met and the marriage lasted. Our own didn’t work out. There is no need to apportion blame.
Do you still believe in love?
I have always believed in fairy tales and a knight in shining armour but my marriage didn’t go that way unfortunately.
There is usually a stigma associated with women who are divorced, doesn’t that bother you?
Stigma ke? That was before. Men can afford to have 20 children from different women. If your wife is abusing you and you cannot take it, my brother, please take a walk. If your husband is abusing you, take a walk. If it is like my own case that both of you cannot agree, you also need to take a walk before somebody wounds the other person. Death is final. So it is better to take off before it degenerates into death. I know somebody that separated from his wife and years later, he came back and begged her and they are back together. He, who fights and runs away lives to fight another day. Don’t die there.
So what if your husband comes back?
No o. But like I said; he, who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day.

Reuben Abati’s “Explosive” Interview, talks Boko Haram & blasts GEJ’s Critic Reuben Abati’s “Explosive” Interview, talks Boko Haram & blasts GEJ’s Critics

President-Jonathan-Reuben-Abati-August-2014-BN-News-BellaNaija.com-01-600x449Now this is a must read.

Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, which he calls “explosive”, defends the commander-in-chief President Jonathan, blasts the opposition party – APC, and addresses reports that the government is not doing anything to end insecurity

Reuben Abati - August 2014 - BN News - BellaNaija.com 01
Read excerpts;
On going cold after joining the government: “This is an old question. I have responded to this question so many times. I don’t owe anybody an apology. It was my decision to take, to work for government, and in particular to work for President Goodluck Jonathan because I believe in him and I admire him. And having taken that decision, I am not going to spend my time apologising to people because as an individual, I have the right to make a choice.

It was my choice to work for President Jonathan and to accept the position of his spokesperson and media adviser and I have absolutely no apology and I have seen that for me, it is a positive move because today, I consider myself much better informed, because I have been on both sides. I have lived the life of the outsider looking at government, governance and society from one observatory and I have also been inside and I can see how government functions.

I don’t think any form of apprenticeship in terms of exposure to public life can be higher than working with the president of a democratic country, working at the highest level of authority. It puts you in a vantage position to learn so much. If this was a course of study in which a certificate is awarded, I think I should be getting close to getting one, having taken so many course units and learning so much.

I am talking about apprenticeship in a serious sense, and the opportunity also to serve one’s country. I don’t think anybody can put that down by saying ‘you were once a social critic, you shouldn’t be here.’ No. In fact, I will encourage so many other journalists and persons in other capacities to come into government and work for government. Why is it an issue that when a journalist works for government, people complain? There are doctors in government. There are engineers working for government, their colleagues have not carried placards. We all have a duty to play a role in the making of our country.

But of course, since I came here, I have seen many of those who criticised me ferociously – our own colleagues – hanging around and hustling for appointments and many of them have taken this or that position in government, much excitedly too. And when they land on this side, I say to them: ‘Ha, I thought you wrote an article the other day and published articles criticising Reuben Abati. You are on this side now too.’ I welcome them and I congratulate them. So, you see, I have no apologies whatsoever. I have no regrets also.”

On criticism that GEJ’s administration isn’t achieving anything: “I don’t know who you are talking about because when you say some people, the only people I still see out there that are misinforming and misleading the people are people who have partisan interests. They are persons who sponsor other people to pull down government because they themselves are interested in the office of the president. But you see, it doesn’t matter, the amount of blackmail or hate campaign or disinformation that those persons put out. They cannot run away from the facts and the facts speak for themselves in terms of the achievements of this administration. And I will urge you also, as a journalist who has the opportunity to do little research on this, to make the effort and to help us inform the public that whoever is saying this administration has done nothing is telling a lie.

Now, for the first time in the history of this country, you have a president who approached the electorate and said: ‘This is my contract with you, this is what I will do, I will focus on the following issues; job creation, inclusive growth, strengthening the education sector, providing infrastructure, ensuring transformation in many aspects of our life both local and in terms of our relationship with the rest of the world, change the look of government and provide purposeful leadership.’ And he has kept his promise on all of these goals.

This is the first administration in Nigeria in recent memory, the first president that would give the directive that his ministers one by one, should go and face the public, face the cabinet first, give an account of what they have been doing and go to the public and also give an account of what they have been doing. This is the government that has upheld the twin pillars of transparency and accountability in every regard.

We just had the gubernatorial election in Osun State. The PDP lost, the opposition won. President Jonathan immediately congratulated the winner. The same people who were complaining that there was too much security are the same people who are now turning around saying President Jonathan did well. They have seen that this is a president who is committed to the rule of law and who is committed to free and fair elections.

Free and fair election became a major refrain under President Jonathan. Before now, nobody in this country ever believed that elections could be free and fair because it was not the pattern for the ruling government at the centre to lose elections. But under President Jonathan, the PDP has lost elections in a number of states; in Anambra, Edo, in Ondo and now, in Osun. You must have lived in this country in those days when elections were determined on the basis of the readings of the preference of the president. But President Jonathan has not imposed anything on anybody. That, in itself, is a major achievement because this is one president who has gone out of his way to deliberately strengthen the democratic culture.

When you were in primary school, depending on how old you are, you probably learnt something about Nigerian Railway lines under Social Studies. Now, that disappeared for almost a whole generation because the railways were not working again. The Nigerian Railway Corporation collapsed. Schools stopped teaching pupils about rail transportation in Nigeria because there was nothing to teach. Under President Jonathan’s watch, the rail stations are back. There is a comprehensive plan to further link up the entire country. President Jonathan is designing a Railway Network that will take rail transportation in this country beyond Lord Lugard.

The trains are moving again and people board those trains and they give concrete evidence, testimonies. Many of the roads that had been abandoned in this country have been fixed. The power situation; some people still complain that maybe power supply is not yet at the level they want, but they all agree that it has improved because President Jonathan has made power sector revolution one of the major priorities of his administration.

The power sector privatisation process was mismanaged by previous administrations. Today, with President Jonathan in charge, it is now adjudged by international investors as one of the freest and the most transparent that they have ever seen, anywhere. There is evidence to that effect. You can research it. And are you still saying nothing has been done? It was under President Jonathan that the Nigerian economy became the largest economy in Africa and our economy that has not been rebased for 20 years was rebased. Foreign Direct Investment is going up, another record achievement in that regard.

In terms of international reputation, our international reputation continues to rise. President Jonathan has empowered women, he has empowered the youths, he is creating jobs. Every month, he is busy launching one legacy project after another. Because he is such a compulsive achiever, I suspect some people are jealous of him. If there are people who think that President Jonathan’s achievements are hurting their egos, they should just be truthful and say so.”

On no movement to end Boko Haram: “It will not be right to say that there is no movement. What people must realise is that the fight against terror is an unconventional kind of war and it is also something that is unusual in our environment. Even in other countries where they have had cases of terrorism, it is not something that was resolved overnight. If you go to Mexico, Colombia, they are still battling with the threat after so many years.

It took America 10 years to be able to track down Osama bin Laden. And the thing to understand about the nature of terrorism is that you are dealing with agents of evil, people who have resolved to wage war against humanity and human civilisation and they do not wear any uniform.

They strike at will and their identity is, for the most part, hidden. One thing we must all know is that in spite of the special challenge it poses in our environment, our security agents have been able to quickly develop a capacity to be able to address the challenge. There may be questions, but all of those questions will be dealt with, because primarily, there is political will to deal with the challenge and that is what is most critical.

What President Jonathan has pointed out is that the war against terrorism may be a long drawn out war, but no matter how long it takes, whatever it takes, the government is determined to win the war because the government is not going to allow people who want to pull down the country, who want to destroy other people’s lives to prevail. That is what the president has said, and he means every word of it.”

On the opposition party calling Jonathan “clueless”: “I have had cause to respond to those people on many occasions. It is very obvious now that it is those people criticizing President Jonathan who are totally clueless. They have no idea whatsoever. You are beginning to see it now. The thing around their neck is beginning to play out. Some of their key spokespersons who used to criticize President Jonathan are now all rushing to come to the President’s party. They are in fact gate-crashing.

I mean, one of the key figures in the APC has declared for the PDP in his home state in Adamawa. And that is a man who was once famously quoted as saying that Nigeria under President Jonathan is a sinking ship. The same man is joining that ship because he has seen that the ship is not sinking at all and that the captain of the ship is a good captain who is providing quality leadership. He has seen the light and the light has set him free. That is the kind of illumination that has been happening to many of these persons. They suddenly see the light and they recant and I am very happy.

Even a former governor and a former Minister have also joined the PDP. These are people who used to criticize the ruling government, these are people who used to criticize President Jonathan but they keep seeing the light. We welcome such people.

So, the same people you are quoting, many of them are coming into the PDP. Many of them are joining President Jonathan. And I believe that as we move towards 2015, you will find more and more people like that. We don’t need to say anything anymore. The Lord Almighty is winning the battle for us.

These are the people who championed the various abuses and they are turning to our side now and supporting us. I mean, there was one person in the fold of APC who even said I was the child of a same-sex marriage just because I pointed out to him that his criticism of President Jonathan was unfair. Today, he is one of the leading defenders of President Jonathan. The thing speaks for itself, then.

They even now make my job easier because those people that I used to fight with, they are coming to our side one by one. We are waiting for Nasir el-Rufai, Lai Muhammed, Oby Ezekwesili, Dino Melaye, and the Jagaban (Bola Tinubu) and their Northern godfathers: may they all see the light, and may the light set them free. And that tells you something, that we have a president who is a true leader who in the fullness of time, you find his worst critics, becoming his strongest promoters. And that is our point; this whole thing should not be about ego, it is about doing the best in all circumstances for our country. Nigeria must and will prevail. We welcome everybody who is willing to be part of that national agenda of progress and transformation. “
