Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has reacted to Boko Haram alleged declaration of an Islamic State in Gwoza area of the state.

The governor’s reaction was contained in a statement he personally wrote on Sunday night, in response to enquiry over the said declaration, a copy obtained by The Nation.

Shettima said he cannot comment on the authenticity of the recent video that was reportedly released by Boko Haram, noting that security experts will look into it.

“I also cannot disclose measures being adopted by security agencies on whatever development in Gwoza or any part of Borno State but I can assure the good people of Borno State and other members of the public that the State Government is actively in touch and supporting security agencies deployed in Borno State in the counter insurgency efforts and insha Allah, the combined efforts will not be in vain,” he said.

The governor also noted that they were studying the situation, assuring that appropriate measures are being put in place by the right authorities, and urge the residents to remain calm and resolute in their support for security operatives.

“The security agencies, I am sure, are in position to analyse the content of the said new video, compare with the facts on ground in Gwoza and brief the Nigerian public as they deem professionally appropriate bearing in mind the national interest and patriotism as well as the overall safety of citizens” he said.
He commended the members of the Nigerian and International media for their firm support for Borno people and its government since the beginning of insurgency in 2009.

“Even as those of us in the media work tirelessly to disseminate information in the discharge of important duties that aim to protect the fundamental rights of the public to know happenings within and around them, we must at this moment, more than ever before, do our jobs with patriotic support for our country and its security forces as well as our passion for humanity as against those that seek to send humanity into extinction,” Shettima said.

The governor expressed optimism that victory will never go the way ofthe terrorist group because they are against their fellow human beings and their rights to life.

It would be recalled that the dreaded terrorist group Boko Haram on August 24, 2014, released a video claiming they have taken over Gwoza town in Borno State, and that they have declared it an Islamic caliphate.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, has said the army would soon launch a massive military offensive to end insurgency in the North-East, in a reaction to the attack on the Mobile Police Training School, Gwoza last week, which left 35 police officers missing.

57 Chibok schoolgirls who managed to escape from the captivity of the dreaded Boko Haram sect have reportedly gained admission into a school in the United States of America (USA).

The Centre for Promotion of Ethics, Values and National Integration (CENPEVNI) said it was able to secure the admission through its collaboration with other groups.

This was disclosed in Abuja by the executive director of the group, and project coordinator, Rehabilitation and Reintegration Outreach Mission (RROM), Dr Mercy Sokomba, at a one day Stakeholders Interactive Session on Effective Victim Support Strategies, Leadership reports.

She said: “The reality of this particular offer is if the girls are ready for another form of separation from their parents. However, we have initiated discussions with some leadership of the Chibok community and at some point will meet with them and the parents for consent.”

She said offers for completion of education of the girls, inclusive of scholarship, have been made to RROM through Stefanos Foundation and the international support groups of RROM while adding that they hope the funds and support partnership will consistently get to RROM for project sustainability within scheduled time frame so as not to hinder the progress the outreach mission has made so far.

She prayed for the safe return of the abducted Chibok girls and many other women and children abducted earlier or after the Chibok girls.

Sokomba who commended the Federal Government in the fight against insurgency, pleaded for a quick resolution of the Boko Haram saga, saying: “The end of terrorism will bring an end to the loss of lives and properties.”

It’s been over four months since over 200 girls were abducted by Boko Haram insurgents from their school in Chibok, Borno state and all the attempts to rescue the girls from their abductors is yet to yield positive result.

After their abduction on April 14, some of them were said to have escaped and have since been re-united with their families, but a large a number of the girls are still being held the abductors.

Over the weekend, reports surfaced that the parents of the missing girls want the case closed and all they want is the corpses of their daughters so they could bury them honourably.

Japan Offers Ebola Drug

download (10)Japan could allegedly provide the self-developed unapproved drug to help treat Ebola.

Reuters reports with reference to Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who briefed journalists at a recent press conference held August 25, said Japan was ready to cooperate with the World Health Organization (WHO) by offering their solution.

“I am informed that medical professionals could make a request for T-705 in an emergency even before a decision by the WHO. In that case, we would like to respond under certain criteria.”

T-705 is the developmental code for the influenza drug favipiravir. The developers, a subsidiary of Fujifilm Holdings Corp., and the U.S. partner MediVector are currently negotiating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the permission to to expand the use of favipiravir to fight Ebola.

Fujifilm spokesman Takao Aoki, explaining the mechanism of drug use, said Ebola and Influenza are same-type viruses adding that theoretically similar effects can be expected on Ebola, ABC News reports. According to the official, the effectiveness of T-705 was confirmed in experiments on mice. The company representative stated that it has favipiravir stock for more than twenty thousand patients.

Meanwhile the figure of people who died from Ebola outbreak in West Africa is gradually approaching 1500.

By the moment there is the only cure associated with treating the deadly virus, and it is a U.S.-developed experimental drug Zmapp which is believed to have saved the lives of 2 Americans infected in Liberia.

Ebola Started With A Toddler — Research

The research has showed that the ongoing epidemic of Ebola started with a chance contact of a toddler with a bat.

According to The Guardian, the group of international scientists came to such a conclusion after having conducted the major investigation regarding the origin of the virus, which has claimed nearly 1500 of lives in West Africa.

The team consisting of researchers, ecologists and anthropologists had worked on tracing the roots of the disease, speaking with people and capturing bats and other animals near the village of Meliandoua, Guinea, where the outbreak is believed to have started last December and later spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Nigeria.

The research results suggested that Ebola was passed from colony to colony of migratory fruit bats until it reached Guinea. Daily Mail adds that the 2-year-boy was bitten by the bat and passed the infection to his mother, both died within a 1-week period. While scientists believe that bats are main carriers of the virus, it is stated that its rare for them to directly transmit the disease to a human as the previous epidemics were caused by meat of the infected animals sold by hunters.
Nigeria got affected by the deadly virus as the Liberian-American man Patrick Sawyer, who traveled to the country, got admitted to a Lagos hospital where he died last month.

Meanwhile Ebola keeps claiming new lives in Nigeria: another nurse, Obi Justina Ejelonu, who attended to Patrick Sawyer died about a week ago in a quarantine facility in Lagos. However it was made known August 23 that her fiance Dennis previously hospitalized with the symptoms similar to those ones of Ebola disease, was discharged from Ebola Isolation Centre as not being infected.

I Will Return To Office- Nyako

download (9)Murtala Nyako, the former Governor of Adamawa State has expressed optimism that he will return to office as the state governor because the lawmakers didn’t follow the laid down procedure in removing him.

The ousted governor made this known in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by his media adviser, Mr. Sajoh Ahmed, a copy obtained by Vanguard.

The former governor, who had alreadyfiled an appeal at the Appeal Court challenging his removal, said there were justifiable reasons to prove that he was unjustly impeached from office by his opponents, who breached the constitutional rules to achieve their aim.

Nyako expressed hope that the court would return him to office because the process leading to his forceful and undemocratic impeachment was illegal.

According to him, the Nigerian judiciary, which is made up of men of integrity and honour, would not find it difficult to restore him to his seat based on evidence that his opponents breached all the provisions of the law to remove him from office due to political reasons.

Nyako further noted that he was optimistic because the judiciary had in the past reversed the removal of governors Joshua Dariye of Plateau, Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo and Peter Obi of Anambra, hence it won’t be difficult for him to be restored as well since he was forced out of office by desperate people.

Nyako, however, advised his supporters to accept the current reality and prepare for the October 15 by-election, which he said would be a repeat of the scenario in Anambra State when Andy Uba emerged the governor after winning an election, but later vacate the seat after 16 days following the court decision which returned Peter Obi.
Meanwhile, it’s been forty days since Nyako was removed from office. It would be recalled that Nyako was impeached from office by the state lawmakers after he was found guilty of corruption charges. The former governor was to be probed over N82billion debt profile by the Government as reported on July 28, 2014. His removal from office also led to mass defection from the All Progressive Congress (APC) to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

2014 U-20 Women's World Cup: Germany Win, Beat Falconets

The German team was victorious in the final of the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. This match was a repeat of 2010 FIFA U-20 Final, and was a real clash of styles and football cultures.

Nigeria showed superior physical shape. The biggest disappointment was the top scorer of the tournament Asisat Oshoala. The in-form striker, who had scored four times in the 1/2-final win over Korea DPR, missed at least two golden opportunities in the first half.
In the next 45 minutes the teams continued to exchange blows. Germany played well and also wasted several good chances.

About five minutes remaining in the match the Falconets scored a goal and were about to start celebrations. Unfortunately, the assistant referee’s flag indicated that the goal was scored from an offside. This was not the only disallowed goal during the match.

The match went to 15+15 extra time. The German team did not wait for long, scored the title-winning goal on the 98th minute. There was a fault by Nigeria’s defence. Bremer won the ball, cut back for Lena Pietermann and Sandra Chiichii was forced to take the ball out of the net.KNL8lpUkJzvZjcTSnlYj6OU8Lena Petermann of Germany scores her team’s first goal against goalkeeper Sandra Chiichii of Nigeria during the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final in Canada. Nigerian Army Plans Massive Attack On Boko Haram

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, said the army would soon launch a massive military offensive to end insurgency in the North-East.

Minimah made this known when he addressed troops of 2 Brigade Port Harcourt at a two-day visit to army formations and units in Rivers on Sunday, 24 August, 2014.

According to him, military hardware will soon arrive into the country in furtherance of the Federal Government resolve to end Boko Haram activities.

“The equipments ordered by the Federal Government will soon be coming into the nation’s shores in a few weeks time.

“As soon as the equipments come in, we will launch a major offensive toward ending this madness of insurgency in the North-East of the country,” he said.JRndNKSZGfyzxKDuaB0dcwLjNigerian soldiers

Minimah said that under President Goodluck Jonathan the army had witnessed significant improvement in personnel welfare and institutional capacity to confront the nation’s security challenges.

He said that efforts were also being made to reduce oil theft in the Niger Delta in response to new techniques devised by oil thieves to sabotage the nation’s economy.

“We cannot say we will completely stamp out oil theft in one day, but then the greater act in pursuing oil thieves is ongoing, and we will see greater result with time,” the Chief of Army Staff said.
Minimah, who also inaugurated six blocks of 28 flats and a block of five flats officers’ quarters built by the 2 Brigade, said the project would reduce accommodation deficit in the barracks.

He commended the Commanding Officer of the 29 Battalion, Lt.-Col. Olusegun Oladuntoye, for building an ultra-modern state-of-the-art Quarter Guard for the brigade.

The leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, also on Sunday released a video where he claimed the insurgent group has taken over Gwoza town in Borno state.

The Islamist sect has staged series of attack in the southern city of Borno lately killing hundreds of people and displacing thousands of others from their villages to neighbouring towns.

No Going Back On Okada Ban, Lagos Commissioner Says

Contrary to recent rumours, the Lagos State Government has said it has no intention of reversing the restriction of commercial motorcyclists from plying major highways and bridges in the state.

This statement was made on Sunday, 24 August, 2014, by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, saying that the government was convinced that the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012 was made in public interest.

“This administration does not have the intention to reverse itself on this important issue now or in the immediate future.

“The reason is simple. By enacting the Law of 2012, we have made considerable gains in discharging the primary responsibility of government to our people in the area of protection of life and property.

“Also, the decision to regulate the use of commercial motorcycles on our highways was not a unilateral decision, but a response to popular demands by members of the public who have been at the receiving end in their daily interactions with the okada operators,” Idirogba said.

Condemning those saying motorcyclists were banned in Lagos, the commissioner explained that there were 9,100 roads in Lagos State, saying that motorcycles below 200cc were restricted on only 475 of the roads.

“This represents 5.6 per cent of roads in Lagos. The result and impact of this decision have been tremendous. Prior to the enactment of the law, we were recording an average of 16 motorcycle-related deaths across the state every month and an average of 646 injured patients from motorcycle-related accidents at states secondary and tertiary hospitals.QEIX57QXYXjpD2psTKIF4WpbLagos Commissioner for Information, Lateef Idirogba, left, at a press briefing held recently.

“As of March this year, our statistics show only 1 to 2 motorcycle-related deaths and less than 100 motorcycle accident related injuries in a month,” he added.

The commissioner said information going round that the government wanted to reverse the restriction was false, adding the Fashola-led administration was the only government that had given recognition to the use of motorcycle as a means of commercial transportation through the instrument of the law and regulations meant to protect the riders and the citizens.

Ibirogba said those sponsoring the information were plotting to snatch ballot boxes with the use of okadas during the 2015 general election.

“We encourage our okada riders to go about their lawful duty by obeying all the provisions of the traffic law,” the commissioner added.

It would be recalled that some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly last week sponsored a motion seeking to a review of the traffic law.

Political, economic, social and security reasons have been adduced to either support or condemn the move by the state lawmakers who are pushing to cut down on the number of roads the commercial motorcycles are currently disallowed to operate.

For the ten lawmakers sponsoring the motion, they include Ajibayo Adeyeye who is the House majority leader, Sanai Agunbiade (Ikorodu 1), Bisi Yusuf (Alimosho 1), Moshood Oshun (Lagos Mainland 2), Rotimi Olowo (Somolu 1), Mudashiru Obasa (Agege 1), Adebimpe Akinsola (Ikorodu 2), Hakeem Masha (Lagos Island 1), Olumuyiwa Jimoh (Apapa 2) and Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2), the motive is basically to put paid to what they see as continued harassment of ‘hapless Okada operators’ by security agents particularly the police who are fully taking advantage of the law to exploit and extort the ‘Okada’ operators.

The lawmakers while making case for the review argued that the police were misapplying the law. According to them, the traffic law was aimed at reducing recklessness on the part of road users and not for the purpose of exploitation by those to implement it.

They contended that given the way it is being applied, the law enforcement agents including the police and LASTMA have gone out of control and this should not be allowed to continue.

According to the lawmakers, their move is motivated by constant complaints from the ‘Okada’ operators in their constituencies about police harassments and intimidation even on approved routes, just as they called on Fashola to reach out to Umar Manko, the state commissioner of police, on the need to urgently call his men to order.

They argued that it has become imperative to revisit the list of the restricted routes so they could be amended where possible to avoid the conflicts between the police and commercial motorcycle operators.

BN Health & Fitness: The Ultimate Butt Exercise with Adagurl

Ada-Ari-600x397One of the top questions I get at the gym is how to grow and firm up the butt. There are tons of machines at the gym, and a plethora of articles you can read that offer advice on targeting the glutes. But most people are intimidated and confused by all the information being thrown at them.

Well here’s an interesting solution – a fun and effective way to get the results you want. I’ll call it the Nigerian butt lift. Below are two workout routines set to some great Nigerian songs. Not only will you enjoy the music, but you will also feel your butt firm up during the creative squat and lunge combinations.

Get together with friends, and try either of these. Enjoy the power and focus in the REPETE workout and focus on sitting low into each squat and lunge. Or rock on to DOROBUCCI as you work your butt while increasing your heartrate. You can do either of these workouts with no equipment. I guarantee you will still feel the results.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think

My Marriage Lasted for Less Than a Month – Princess

Newly-weds-Adesola-and-Princesss-2

Comedienne Princess Damilola has opened up once again about her failed marriage, telling Punch that her marriage lasted less than a month and she fell ill and had to be hospitalized after her husband left her. Excerpts from the interview below…
You didn’t say what was wrong with you that you had to be hospitalized?
But you already know. We thank the Lord. The most important thing is that I am alive and better. I appreciate life more. But this one you are asking, e no reach make I sick? After my husband left after our wedding, was it not enough reason for me to be sick? Ah! The Lord is our strength.
Why are you making fun of this?
Ah! I am telling you the truth o. The truth is that we all have challenges in our lives. I have always believed that the challenge is not the issue but how you get up and get over it. I was very down last year. It was my low moment. But with the help of God and the support of my family and friends, I am here now. I am happy.
Are you no longer depressed?
I was never depressed. I reacted like every normal human being would react if she embarks on a lifetime journey and it doesn’t go as she planned it. But God has a reason for everything.
Are there times you wish you weren’t a celebrity especially when you are linked with controversies?
The only time I felt bad about my fame was when my marriage ended. I felt if I weren’t this popular; people wouldn’t have talked about it. So many marriages crash on a daily basis but you will not hear about them. Some people have been married five times but you will not hear their gist because they are not in the eye of the public. People didn’t know that the marriage had broken up until December when I felt I was strong enough to handle the publicity that it generated.
Were you shocked with the kind of publicity it generated?
I was shocked! People called me from all parts of the world including China. Some people cried while some people felt happy. Some guys said they were happy my marriage ended. Some said they were not happy that I even married the guy. Some said I looked older than him. Some said my marriage shouldn’t have ended just like that. People talked and talked. But the only time you know your marriage is successful is when you live with your partner and God calls one of you home. Marriage of 30 years can still break up. It is a bad thing for a marriage to breakup. So you can imagine the unhappiness the parties involved would be going through. Nobody is happy when his/her marriage ends. Some people see me outside and ask, ‘your marriage has ended, how do you feel?’ I will answer them that I am jumping up or how else do they expect me to feel? Nonsense! A comedian once said that ‘complete’ and ‘finish’ appear to have the same meaning but they are not the same. If you marry the right person, you are complete but if you marry the wrong person, you are finished.
Were you in love with him in the first place?
I got married to somebody who I was in love with. At that time, he also said he loved me. Unfortunately, the marriage ended too soon.
Why?
It was due to irreconcilable differences. It is not a thing of joy. I don’t think we should celebrate sadness and bad news. We should be more sensitive. No marriage should end but peradventure it does, don’t make a mockery of that person. You are not even mocking the person, you are mocking God.
Are you giving it another shot?
No! Me ke? Let us struggle first and make some money. In any case, I think I should marry a Chinese or an Indian. If many people agree that I should marry a Chinese, then I will go ahead. But a Japanese might be better. Japanese products are strong and reliable.
Is your ex-husband still your friend?
I don’t think you should call him my ‘ex-husband’ because we were together for less than one month. An ex- husband is somebody you marry and after three years or more, you separate. Anyway, I don’t know where he is. We have moved on.
Are you happy?
I am happier now and I am better. I was happy before, the only thing that got me sad was that the marriage ended. I did one wedding and it didn’t go well and I am alive. I should thank God. A lot of people lose their spouses just after a week of marriage. As long as you are alive, have hope. If God says I should marry again, I will follow His will. I have made my own attempt, let God make His own. I am sure he (ex-husband) is okay anywhere he is anyway.
Wasn’t the break-up your fault?
No. it wasn’t my fault. I can’t really say it was his fault too. It was just irreconcilable differences. We met and we were in love and we quickly got married. Maybe we got married too quickly but I have seen people who got married a month after they met and the marriage lasted. Our own didn’t work out. There is no need to apportion blame.
Do you still believe in love?
I have always believed in fairy tales and a knight in shining armour but my marriage didn’t go that way unfortunately.
There is usually a stigma associated with women who are divorced, doesn’t that bother you?
Stigma ke? That was before. Men can afford to have 20 children from different women. If your wife is abusing you and you cannot take it, my brother, please take a walk. If your husband is abusing you, take a walk. If it is like my own case that both of you cannot agree, you also need to take a walk before somebody wounds the other person. Death is final. So it is better to take off before it degenerates into death. I know somebody that separated from his wife and years later, he came back and begged her and they are back together. He, who fights and runs away lives to fight another day. Don’t die there.
So what if your husband comes back?
No o. But like I said; he, who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day.
